The Honda EU70iS is a large petrol inverter generator built for serious backup power: Honda lists it at 7000 Watts, with inverter technology, a four-stroke fuel-injected engine, electric start and a weight of 118kg1. A distributor gives the working figures as 5.50 kW continuous and 6.50 kW maximum2, which is enough to carry a household's essentials and more, provided it is sited and used safely.
That size comes with real obligations. A petrol generator makes carbon monoxide, so it must never run indoors, in a garage or in any enclosed space, and it must sit well away from windows, doors and vents. It is also heavy at 118kg1, so plan where it will live and how it will get there before an outage, not during one.
This page sets out what the EU70iS is, what it can run and for how long, how loud and heavy it is, and how to use, refuel and store it safely. It is a description of one machine, not a recommendation over any other.
What the Honda EU70iS is and who it suits
The EU70iS is an inverter suitcase generator: a portable generator built around inverter electronics rather than a simple alternator2. Inverter generators are generally lighter and more compact than conventional generators, which is why the type is often called a suitcase generator, and they are easier to transport and store4. The EU70iS uses True Sine Wave inverter technology, a single-phase inverter system that the distributor says provides stable, clean power safe for sensitive electronics3.
That clean output is the point of paying for an inverter. The distributor states that the inverter technology produces the high quality output required by sensitive electronic equipment such as computers, reducing the risk of crashes or electrical damage2. For a household, that means a machine that can run a fridge, lights, a router and a laptop without the flicker and risk that a rough supply brings.
Honda's own product listing gives the headline specification: 7000 Watts, inverter technology, a four-stroke engine with fuel injection, electric start and 118kg1. The distributor describes it as a 7.0 kVA machine3, and lists continuous and maximum ratings of 6.87 kVA and 8.12 kVA2. Honda has been making portable power since 1964 and was the first to use inverter technology in a generator, according to the distributor3.
Who it suits is a household that expects long outages and wants to carry a substantial load: a heating system's pumps, a fridge and freezer, lighting and electronics together, rather than one appliance at a time. It is not a machine you lift onto a shelf. If you want something you can carry in one hand, a smaller inverter generator or a battery power station is the better shape of answer; see Portable Generators: Petrol, Diesel, Dual-Fuel and Inverter Types and Portable Power Station or Petrol Generator for a Power Cut.
Output: 5.50 kW continuous, 6.50 kW maximum

The figures that decide what you can run are the continuous rating and the maximum. The distributor lists 5.50 kW continuous and 6.50 kW maximum2, and elsewhere gives 5500 rated watts and 7000 max watts3. Honda's own listing states 7000 Watts1. The machine outputs 230V at 50Hz3, with a rated current of 23.9A3 and a frequency of 50Hz2.
The difference between the two numbers matters. Continuous output is what the generator will carry hour after hour. Maximum output is a short-term ceiling for appliances that draw a surge when they start, such as a fridge compressor or a pump. Plan your load around the continuous figure and treat the maximum as headroom for starting surges, not as a running allowance. Watts, Watt-Hours and Surge Explained sets out how to add up a household's load.
The sockets decide what you can plug in without adaptors. The EU70iS has two 230V 16A sockets, one 230V 32A socket and a 12V 12A DC output for battery charging3. The 32A socket is the one that lets you use the machine's full capacity through a single connection.
| Specification | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Rated output | 5500 W (5.50 kW) | 2,3 |
| Maximum output | 7000 W (6.50 kW) | 2,3 |
| Continuous kVA | 6.87 kVA | 2 |
| Maximum kVA | 8.12 kVA | 2 |
| Voltage and frequency | 230V at 50Hz | 2,3 |
| Rated current | 23.9A | 3 |
| Sockets | Two 230V 16A, one 230V 32A, one 12V 12A DC | 3 |
If you need more than this, the EU70iS supports parallel operation with a second EU70iS using an optional parallel operation box, doubling output to 14,000 W3. Two of the same EU models can be linked with a parallel cable, which doubles the output over a single unit2. Use only the maker's purpose-designed kit: some compatible inverter generators can be connected using a purpose-designed parallel kit that combines their output5.
Run time: up to 18 hours at quarter load on a 19.2 litre tank
How long the EU70iS runs depends almost entirely on what you ask it to carry. The distributor states it can run for up to 6 hours at full load and up to 18 hours at 25% load on unleaded petrol3, and separately gives an operating time of up to 6 hours and 30 minutes at rated load3. The fuel tank is 19.2 litres3.
That spread is the single most useful thing to understand about a generator. At a quarter load, the machine is idling through a light demand and sipping fuel; at full load it is working hard and drinking it. Eco Throttle is what makes the difference visible in practice: it automatically adjusts engine speed to precisely match the load, which saves fuel, extends engine life and keeps running quieter3. A Low Idle Control does a similar job, reducing noise, saving fuel and cutting engine wear3.
For a household, the practical lesson is to run the generator for a block of hours to recharge the fridge, run the heating pumps and top up devices, then shut it down, rather than leaving it running all day at low demand. That stretches a tank and reduces the hours on the engine.
Size, weight and noise: 118kg and 52 to 58 dB(A) at 7m

The EU70iS is a heavy machine. Honda lists 118kg1. The distributor gives dimensions of 848mm in length with the handle up, extending to 1198mm, 700mm in width and 721mm in height3. That is a two-person lift or a wheeled move, and it needs a firm, level surface outdoors where it can stay for the duration of an outage.
Noise is better than its size suggests. The distributor states the EU70iS operates at 52 to 58 dB(A) at 7m, comparable to a normal conversation3, and gives 52 dB(A) at 7m at a quarter load3. Elsewhere the same distributor quotes quiet operation at 52 to 60 dB(A)3. The machine's sound pressure level at the workstation is 75 dB(A), with a guaranteed sound power level of 91 dB(A)3. Acoustically insulated casings and an advanced exhaust muffler system reduce operational noise2.
For context, a maker of battery power stations describes petrol generators generally as weighing 50 to 70 kg, noisy, bulky and inconvenient for long-term use6. The EU70iS is heavier still, so the trade is clear: more output, more weight, and a noise level you should discuss with neighbours before a long outage. How Loud Is a Generator? Noise and Neighbours covers that ground.

| Weight | 118kg | 1 |
| Dimensions | 848mm long (1198mm with handle extended), 700mm wide, 721mm high | 3 |
| Noise at 7m | 52 to 58 dB(A), about a normal conversation | 3 |
| Noise at 7m, quarter load | 52 dB(A) | 3 |
| Sound pressure at workstation | 75 dB(A) | 3 |

Safety features and safe use
The EU70iS carries sensible protections. It has a low oil alert system for automatic shutdown, reset circuit breaker overload protection, LED indicator lights and an anti-vibration system with straight engine rubber mounts3. Those features protect the machine; they do not protect you from the exhaust.
The Health and Safety Executive's position, and that of the fire and rescue services, is that petrol generators are outdoor equipment only. Generator Safety: Carbon Monoxide, Fuel and Electric Shock and Can You Run a Generator Indoors or in a Garage? set out the detail, and Carbon Monoxide from Generators: Warning Signs covers what to watch for.
Fuel brings its own rules. The EU70iS runs on unleaded petrol with no more than 10% ethanol, which is E103. Switch the engine off and let it cool before refuelling, refuel outdoors, and never overfill. Store petrol only as your local rules allow; How Much Petrol Can I Store at Home Safely? explains the limits.
Electrical safety matters too. The machine's inverter technology produces the high quality output required by sensitive electronic equipment such as computers, reducing the risk of crashes or electrical damage3, but that does not make it safe to back-feed a house through a socket. Connecting a generator to your home's wiring needs a proper changeover arrangement installed by a competent electrician; see Connecting a Generator or Battery to Your Home's Wiring. For plug-in loads, keep extension leads short, fully uncoiled and rated for the current, as set out in Extension Leads and Overloading With Backup Kit.
Starting, monitoring and charging from the EU70iS

Starting is by electric start, which Honda lists alongside the fuel-injected four-stroke engine1. The engine itself is a GX390, four-stroke, overhead valve, single cylinder, 389cc, fuel-injected, with transistorised ignition and forced air cooling, running at a maximum of 3600rpm3. Before each start, check the oil: the engine holds 1.1 litres3, and one distributor supplies a free 0.6 litre bottle of Honda 10W30 engine oil with each order, either in the bottle or already in the machine3. The low oil alert will shut the engine down automatically if the level drops3.
The i-Monitor panel is how you keep an eye on it. i-Monitor technology provides information for hours of operation, wattage and engine speed, as well as diagnostics for convenient servicing, and a self-diagnosis function protects the machine3. In practice you can see how hard it is working and when a service is due.
For battery charging, the EU70iS has a 12V DC output providing up to 12A, which the distributor describes as ideal for battery charging with an optional cable3. That is a useful way to top up a leisure battery or a car battery during a long outage, but it is a basic DC output, not a multi-stage charger. Follow the maker's instructions for the cable and the battery, and never charge a frozen or damaged battery. Warranty, servicing and UK availability
The EU70iS comes with a 5-year domestic warranty, subject to annual servicing, and a 1-year commercial warranty3. The annual service condition is the part that catches people out: keep the service record, because the longer cover depends on it.
Availability in the UK has been uneven. One distributor lists the machine as on pre-order, not available for immediate dispatch, with delivery from the week commencing 2nd November 20262. The maker states that the EU70is comes with a 5-year domestic warranty (subject to annual servicing) and a 1-year commercial warranty3. Check stock with the seller before you plan around a delivery date.
Servicing is straightforward for a machine of this type: the annual service keeps the 5-year domestic warranty valid, as the maker states3. Store the generator under cover, dry and with the fuel system handled as the maker instructs; How to Store a Generator After a Power Cut sets out the routine.
