Ledlenser H8R: A Rechargeable Head Torch for Power Cuts

Wondering whether the Ledlenser H8R is a sensible head torch to keep for a power cut?

The Ledlenser H8R is a rechargeable head torch that Ledlenser rates at up to 600 lumens, with a beam that reaches 150 metres on its brightest setting and a low setting that will run for 120 hours1. For a household getting ready for a power cut, that combination is the point: a bright beam for checking outside and a very long, dim burn for the long evening when the lights have gone off and you still need to cook, read and move about safely.

It is worn on the head, so both hands stay free, and it weighs 158g with the battery in2. It charges from a USB source in 360 minutes, or 6 hours, and it is rated IP54 for water spray and drop tested from 2 metres1. Ledlenser sells it in three forms: the standard H8R, the H8R SE Special Edition and the 25th Anniversary Edition, and the differences between them matter when you are choosing which to keep in a drawer3.

This page sets out what the torch does in an emergency, how long it lasts on each setting, how to charge and store it so it is ready when you need it, and how the warranty works. It does not cover everyday features that make no difference in a power cut.

What the H8R is, and what it does for a household in an emergency

The H8R is a head torch rather than a hand torch, and that shapes what it is good for. When the power fails, the jobs that follow are mostly two-handed: lighting a gas hob, filling a kettle, finding the fuse box, reading a meter, settling a child or a pet. A torch strapped to your head leaves both hands free for all of it, and it points wherever you look, which is why a head torch is often the first light people reach for in a power cut.

Ledlenser describes the H8R as delivering up to 600 lumens of rechargeable, hands-free illumination2. The light comes from a single white LED with a colour temperature of 6000k to 8000k, which is a cool white light, and a colour rendering index of 651. In plain terms it is a bright, slightly blue-white beam, good for picking out detail and distance rather than for a warm, cosy glow.

The head moves through 65°, so you can angle it down at a hob or a book without tipping your whole head, and the light housing is 36mm across2. The headband is detachable and washable, which matters if it has been worn through a muddy flood clean-up or a long night in a cold house4.

Where it fits a household plan is as the working light: the one you wear to do things, rather than the one you leave on a table to light a room. If you are still deciding between the two, our comparison of a torch or head torch for a power cut sets out the trade-offs, and the wider head torches page covers what else is available.

Run time: up to 120 hours on Low Power

The figure that matters most in an emergency is not the brightest setting but the longest one. Ledlenser gives the H8R three brightness settings, and the run times vary enormously between them1:

SettingBrightnessBeam distanceRun time
Low Power10 lumens20 metres120 hours1
Mid Power250 lumens100 metres15 hours1
Standard Power600 lumens150 metres10 hours1

A head torch leaves both hands free for the jobs that follow a power cut.

Read that table as a plan rather than a specification. On Low Power the torch will run for 120 hours, which is five days of continuous use, far longer than most power cuts last. That is the setting to use for moving around the house, checking on people and finding things, and it is bright enough for most indoor jobs at 10 lumens. Save Standard Power for the moments that need it: checking a fence in a storm, signalling, or looking down a long garden.

The jump between settings is steep. Standard Power gives you 10 hours, and if you leave the torch on that setting by accident you will have used a good part of your reserve before you notice. Ledlenser fits a transport lock to prevent the light being turned on accidentally and using up battery, so engage it before the torch goes back in a bag or drawer4.

Our page on how long a torch battery lasts on low explains why these low-setting figures are so much longer than the bright ones, and lumens, beam distance and run time explained unpicks what the numbers mean in practice.

Light modes, beam distance and the focus system

The H8R uses Ledlenser's Advanced Focus System with Rapid Focus, which lets you focus the beam seamlessly as a spot or a flood1. In an emergency that is more useful than it sounds. A spot throws light a long way, which helps when you are looking for something at the end of a garden or checking whether a road is passable. A flood spreads light across a room or a work surface, which is what you want when you are cooking, dressing a wound or reading instructions by torchlight.

The beam distance figures follow the brightness settings: 150 metres on Standard Power, 100 metres on Mid Power and 20 metres on Low Power1. Beam distance is measured to the point where the light falls to a low level, so treat it as a guide to reach rather than a promise of usable light at that range.

Smart Light Technology gives you control over the modes, and there is a front switch for one-handed operation1. The torch also has a Temperature Control System, which protects it if it runs hot on a high setting for a long time1. A battery charge level indicator shows how much is left, so you can check the torch before an evening rather than discovering it is flat in the middle of one1.

The H8R SE differs here: Ledlenser lists it with four brightness modes rather than three, and a maximum beam distance of 170 metres, with Power mode at 400 lumens and a 130m beam over a 6-hour runtime, Mid power at 200 lumens and 90m over 9 hours, and Low power at 10 lumens and 20m over 70 hours3. If you are choosing between versions, that is the practical difference: the SE trades some outright brightness for an extra step in the range.

The rear red light and the colour filter caps

Two features on the H8R are worth understanding before an emergency rather than during one.

The first is the rear red light. Ledlenser states that the red light operates independently of the main front beam, allowing both to be used simultaneously2. That means you can light your way ahead and still be seen from behind, which matters if you are out in the dark near a road, a driveway or a flooded lane. A red light also preserves your night vision better than white, and it is less likely to wake someone in the same room. Our page on what red light mode is for goes into more detail.

The second is the colour filter cap set, which comes as standard with the H8R. These are physical caps that attach to the torch head to convert the white beam to another colour2. They are a simple, unpowered accessory, which is exactly the kind of thing worth having in an emergency kit: nothing to charge, nothing to fail.

Charging and battery: 6 hours from USB-A

The colour filter caps push onto the torch head and change the colour of the beam.

The H8R charges from a standard USB-A source in 360 minutes, or 6 hours1. That is a long charge, and it is the single most important thing to plan around. If a storm is forecast, charge the torch before it arrives, not after the power goes off. A 6-hour charge from a wall socket is easy; a 6-hour charge from a power bank in a dark house is a real draw on your reserve.

The charging arrangements differ by version:

  • Standard H8R: Micro-USB to USB-A charging cable, included in the box1.
  • H8R SE: 360 minutes via USB-A to Micro-USB3.
  • 25th Anniversary Edition: 360 minutes via USB-C, which Ledlenser describes as universal cable compatibility4.

The battery is an 18650 Li-ion cell. The standard H8R is listed with a 3400mAh battery capacity2, while the SE is listed with a built-in 3,200mAh rechargeable battery at 3.6V3. The 25th Anniversary Edition includes two 18650 batteries rather than one, which Ledlenser says effectively doubles the available runtime4.

For a household, the sensible routine is to keep the torch charged, keep a charged power bank for a second charge, and know which cable you need. Our guide to torch batteries, including 18650 and built-in packs, explains what an 18650 cell is and why it is worth standardising on.

Toughness: IP54, a 2-metre drop and -20 to +40°C

Emergency lighting gets used in bad conditions, and the H8R is rated for some of them. It carries an IP54 rating, which means it is protected against dust and against water spray1. That is enough for rain, a wet hand or a splash while you are working, but it is not a diving rating and it is not designed to be submerged. Our page on what IPX ratings mean explains the scale.

It is drop tested from 2 metres1, which covers the realistic accident of a torch slipping off a head onto a hard floor or a path. The working temperature range is -20°C to +40°C1, so it will keep working in a cold, unheated house in winter and in a hot loft in summer. It is not rated for use below -20°C or above +40°C.

H8R versions: standard, SE and 25th Anniversary Edition

Ledlenser sells three versions of the H8R, and the differences are worth knowing before you buy or register one.

The SE is a 2022 Special Edition of the H8R with a redesigned headband and updated presentation, and it shares the core specification of the standard model: Advanced Focus System, Smart Light Technology, rear red light, IP54 and a 3,200mAh battery3. It is rechargeable as standard with no AAA option, so it is not the torch to choose if you want to run it on disposable batteries6.

The 25th Anniversary Edition is the one to look at if long runtime matters most. Ledlenser says it carries two 18650 batteries instead of the standard single battery, effectively doubling available runtime, and it moves the charging port from Micro-USB to USB-C4. It also comes with a 25-year warranty with registration, which is a different arrangement from the standard 7-year extension5.

If you are buying the torch as part of a wider kit, Ledlenser also sells an H8R bundle with a P3 Core torch, which includes the H8R head torch with its 18650 battery, USB charging cable and headband, plus the P3 Core with an AAA alkaline battery and pocket clip2. Both carry the 7-year warranty with registration2. A small backup torch in a pocket is a sensible companion to a head torch, and our page on the Ledlenser P3 Core covers that model.

Keeping it ready: a household routine

A head torch is only useful if it works when the lights go out. The H8R's long charge time and its transport lock make a short routine worth building:

  1. Charge it fully and check the indicator. A full charge takes 360 minutes, or 6 hours, so do it on a day when you are at home1.
  2. Engage the transport lock before it goes back in the drawer, so it cannot be switched on accidentally and drain the battery4.
  3. Store it somewhere you can find in the dark, with its cable, and tell everyone in the household where that is. Our page on where to keep torches so you can find them in the dark has suggestions.
  4. Check it before winter and before any named storm. Our lighting checks before winter checklist covers the whole household's lights, not just this one.
  5. Keep a charged power bank and the right cable for a second charge, and know which cable your version needs.

The power cut checklist pulls these steps together with the rest of the household's lighting, and the emergency kit section covers what else belongs alongside it.

Support and warranty: 7 years with online registration

Ledlenser's standard warranty period is 2 years, which can be extended by a further 5 years with online registration, up to 7 years, covering defects in manufacturing5. The H8R and the H8R SE both carry the 7-year warranty with registration1, and so does the H8R and P3 Core bundle2. The 25th Anniversary Edition is listed with a 25-year warranty5.

The warranty covers defects in manufacturing. It does not apply to all products, and Ledlenser lists exclusions including its K Series keyring lights, Kid's Lights, Lite Wallet, Solidline and TFX ranges, and accessories including batteries, power banks, spare parts and replacement parts1. In practice that means the torch body is covered but a worn-out battery is a consumable you replace yourself.

Replacement batteries are available. Ledlenser lists a genuine 18650 3,000mAh replacement, item 501001, and a Li-ion direct USB rechargeable battery of 2,500mAh, item 502595, as an alternative3. It also lists compatible accessories including the Powerbank Flex3 (item 502126), the Powerbank Flex7 (item 502125) and a Helmet Band Fixing Clip Type A (item 502313)3. Register the torch when it arrives, keep the receipt, and note the item number if you have the SE, which is 5024213.

For the wider range, see the Ledlenser brand page. If you are still choosing between a head torch and a handheld, our guide to torches and how to choose one for home and the emergency lighting section cover the alternatives, including lanterns for lighting a room and solar and wind-up lamps that need no batteries at all.

Common questions

Can I use the Ledlenser H8R for running?

It will light the way, but it is not built for running. Ledlenser describes the H8R as a capable head torch and points runners to its NEO Series, which it says is specifically optimised for running performance. For a household, the more useful question is whether it suits jobs in the dark during a power cut, and a head torch that leaves both hands free does that well.

What charging cable does the H8R use?

It depends on the version. The standard H8R and the H8R SE charge through a Micro-USB to USB-A cable, and the standard model comes with one in the box. The 25th Anniversary Edition has moved to USB-C for what Ledlenser calls universal cable compatibility. All three take 360 minutes, or 6 hours, to reach a full charge.

What comes in the box with the H8R?

The standard H8R arrives with the head torch, an 18650 Li-ion battery, a Micro-USB to USB-A charging cable, the headband and a colour filter cap set. The H8R SE adds a Pouch Type P and its own Micro-USB cable. The 25th Anniversary Edition includes two 18650 batteries rather than one. Check the listing for the exact version before you buy.

How heavy is the H8R on your head?

Ledlenser gives the weight as 158g with the battery fitted, for the standard H8R, the SE and the 25th Anniversary Edition alike. That is light enough to wear for a long evening of cooking, reading or moving round a dark house, and the headband is detachable and washable. Adjust it before the power goes so you are not fiddling with it in the dark.

Can you replace the battery in the H8R?

Yes. The H8R SE takes a replaceable Li-ion battery of 3,200mAh at 3.6V, and Ledlenser lists a genuine 18650 3,000mAh replacement, item 501001, plus a direct USB rechargeable 2,500mAh battery, item 502595, as an alternative. A spare battery plus a charged power bank is the simplest way to keep the torch going through a long outage.

Can you use the front light and the rear red light at the same time?

Yes. Ledlenser states that the red light operates independently of the main front beam, so both can be used simultaneously. That is useful when you are working outside in the dark and want to be seen as well as to see, or when you want a low red glow that does not spoil your night vision while you check on the household.

What is the item number for the H8R SE?

The H8R SE carries item number 502421. Quote it when you are checking a listing, ordering a spare part or registering the torch for its warranty. The SE is a 2022 Special Edition of the H8R with a redesigned headband and updated presentation, and it shares the core specification of the standard model.
