The Ledlenser P7R Signature is a rechargeable handheld torch that Ledlenser lists as sold out on its UK site, so you cannot buy one new from the maker at the moment1. If you already own one, or you are weighing up a secondhand one, it is a capable household light: a 2500 lumen boost mode reaching 340 metres, a low mode that runs for 80 hours, and an IP68 rating for dust and water2. It also has a feature that matters in a power cut. If the power is cut while the torch is charging, it turns itself on to give you light1.
That combination, a bright torch that doubles as an emergency light, is why it turns up in preparedness conversations. The trade-offs are the ones that come with any high-output rechargeable torch: the brightest settings last minutes rather than hours, a full charge takes 270 minutes, and the battery is a specialist 21700 cell rather than ordinary AA batteries you can buy at a corner shop1.
This page sets out what the torch can do, how long each setting lasts, how to charge, use and store it safely, and what support Ledlenser offers. It does not compare it with other torches or rank it against them. For the wider picture, see Emergency Lighting at Home: Torches, Lanterns and Candles.
What the P7R Signature is, and who it suits
Ledlenser describes the P7R Signature as one of its most premium, high quality torches, first listed in 20201. It is a full-size handheld light, 202g in weight, with a 35mm head and a 27mm tube, 165mm long when focused and 158mm when defocused1. That is small enough for a coat pocket or a glovebox and large enough to hold properly for a long job in the dark.
The maker lists hiking, boating, photography and professional outdoor use among its intended uses, along with everyday carry and dog walking2. For a household, the more useful framing is by job:
- A light by the door or on a wall mount, kept on charge, so it comes on by itself if the power fails1.
- A light for the garden, loft or fuse box, where the focus system lets you switch between a tight spot and a wide flood1.
- A light for the car or a bag, where the IP68 rating and 2 metre drop test give some margin for knocks and wet weather1.
- A signalling light, using the SOS, position and blink modes1.
It is less suited to a child's bedside table or to a drawer where it might sit for years unused, because a rechargeable lithium-ion torch wants charging now and then to be ready. If that is your situation, a simpler battery torch may serve better; see Torches: Types and How to Choose One for Home and Rechargeable or Battery Torches for Emergencies.
Brightness, beam and run time, setting by setting

The headline figure is 2500 lumens at 340 metres in Boost Mode, which Ledlenser describes as a short burst of maximum power for when you need it most2. Boost is for a glance across a field or down a lane, not for lighting a room for an evening. The settings that matter for a power cut are the lower ones, where the run time stretches out.
Ledlenser's own product pages give two sets of figures for the same torch, and they do not match. The newer page gives 2000 lumens in boost and 1200 lumens at standard power for 2 hours1; the other gives 2500 lumens in boost and 1400 lumens at standard power for 2.5 hours2. Where they disagree, this page gives both and says so. The low-power figures also differ: 15 lumens for 90 hours on one page1, 25 lumens for 80 hours on the other2.
| Setting | Brightness | Beam distance | Run time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boost | 2500 lumens | 340 metres | short burst | 2 |
| Boost (other page) | 2000 lumens | 330 metres | short burst | 1 |
| Standard Power | 1400 lumens | 260 metres | 2.5 hours | 2 |
| Standard Power (other page) | 1200 lumens | 200 metres | 2 hours | 1 |
| Mid Power | 500 lumens | 160 metres | 5.5 hours | 2 |
| Low Power | 25 lumens | 35 metres | 80 hours | 2 |
| Low Power (other page) | 15 lumens | 20 metres | 90 hours | 1 |
The practical reading is straightforward. On the brightest settings you get minutes to a couple of hours; on the lowest you get days of evening light. For a power cut, start low and only step up when you need to see something specific. The colour temperature is given as 6000K to 7500K, a cool white light, with a colour rendering index of 801. For how lumens and beam distance translate into real use, see Lumens, Beam Distance and Run Time Explained.
Signalling and emergency modes
Beyond steady light, the P7R Signature carries a set of modes aimed at being seen and being found. Ledlenser lists Blink, Position, S.O.S, Strobe, Dim and Red Light Mode1. The SOS mode emits the distress signal in Morse code, three short, three long, three short1. Position mode gives two short pulses of light, repeated three times, to alert others of your location1. Blink gives automatic light impulses at regular intervals1.
Red Light Mode is there to maintain night vision in the dark, and the torch has both white and red LEDs1. That is useful when you want to check something without losing your adapted eyesight, or to avoid lighting up a whole room. For more on when these modes help and when they do not, see How to Use SOS and Strobe Modes on a Torch and What Is Red Light Mode For?.
A Mode Select Ring lets you switch quickly between light modes, activate the transport lock and reach the charging port2. The transport lock stops the torch turning on accidentally and using up battery1, which is worth engaging before you put it in a bag. A front switch on the head lets you use it one-handed1. Smart Light Technology lets you program a variety of light functions to your personal preference1.
Water, dust, drops and cold
The P7R Signature is rated IP68 for protection against dust and water, which Ledlenser attributes to its Flex Sealing Technology1. It has also passed a 2 metre drop test1. In household terms, that means rain, a puddle, a dusty loft and a knock off a shelf are within what the maker says it will take. It does not mean you should submerge it deliberately or use it underwater.
The working temperature range is -20 to +40 degrees Celsius1, so a British winter is inside its stated limits. Cold still shortens the run time of any lithium-ion battery, so keep the torch somewhere warmer than a shed or an unheated car boot if you want the full figures. Temperature Control keeps the light from overheating so it can run brighter and longer1, which matters on the higher settings.
Charging it safely, and the auto-on power cut feature
The torch charges through Ledlenser's Magnetic Charge System, described as safe, reliable charging that is quick and easy to use, using a magnetic charging cable with a Type A plug1. A full charge takes 270 minutes1. A battery status and charge indicator, plus a low battery warning, show where you stand on power1. When the charge runs low, the torch drops to a low-power mode giving about one hour of remaining light1.

The feature most relevant to a household is Emergency Light. Ledlenser states that if power is cut while your torch is charging, it will auto turn on to give you light1. To use it, leave the torch on charge in a fixed spot, such as the wall mount supplied in the box, and check the indicator now and then. The torch is not a substitute for a dedicated power failure light, but it does mean a charging torch is not wasted overnight.
"Emergency Light - if power is cut while your torch is charging, it will auto turn on to give you light"
The 21700 battery, storage and replacement
The P7R Signature runs on one Li-ion rechargeable 21700 battery at 3.7 volts, with a stated capacity of 4800mAh1. The maker's other page gives the battery voltage as 3.6 volts2, so the two pages disagree slightly on that figure. The battery is included in the box1. It is not an AA or AAA cell, so you cannot swap in ordinary batteries from a shop, and a spare 21700 is the sensible thing to hold if you rely on the torch.
Ledlenser's product page does not set out a step-by-step procedure for replacing the battery. Follow the instructions supplied with the torch, and if in doubt contact Ledlenser's UK support team before opening anything. Never fit a different size or chemistry of cell. For background on cell types, see Torch Batteries: AA, AAA, 18650 and Built-In Packs.
For storage, the maker states that the transport lock stops the torch turning on accidentally and using up battery1. Charge it periodically rather than leaving it flat for months. Where to keep it is covered in Where to Keep Torches So You Can Find Them in the Dark.
What comes in the box, and what it weighs
Ledlenser lists the box contents as a Li-ion 21700 battery, a magnetic charging cable with a Type A plug, a genuine leather storage pouch, a USB 3-pin adapter plug, a wrist loop, a pocket clip and a wall mount1. The wall mount is the piece that makes the emergency light feature practical, because it gives the torch a permanent home on charge.

The maker's other page gives the defocused length as 159mm rather than 158mm2, so the two pages disagree by a millimetre. The torch is made from 75% recycled aluminium with a distinctive red light ring2.
Support, warranty and buying one now
Ledlenser offers a standard warranty period of 2 years, extendable by a further 5 years with online registration, up to 7 years, covering defects in manufacturing1. The maker's pages do not agree on how to express this: one gives the full 2 plus 5 structure1, another simply says up to 7 years3. Register your light for extended peace of mind and long-term reliability4. The warranty does not apply to all products, including the K Series keyring lights, Kid's Lights, Lite Wallet, Solidline, TFX range and all accessories including batteries, power banks and spare parts2.
Ledlenser says its lights are engineered in Germany and that it offers friendly, knowledgeable support from its UK team whenever you need assistance, along with fast delivery and free UK returns4. For the current range and how to reach that team, see the Ledlenser brand page.
On availability: the Ledlenser UK product page listed the P7R Signature as sold out when checked on 25 October 20261. That is a stock position, not a recall or a safety notice. If you want one, ask the UK support team about availability. If you already own one, keep it charged, keep the transport lock on in storage, and check the battery indicator before winter. For a seasonal routine, see Lighting Checks Before Winter and the Power Cut Checklist.
