The Aqara Smart Lock U200 is a retrofit smart lock. It fits over the lock you already have rather than replacing it, so you keep your existing door furniture and add fingerprint, PIN, phone and card unlocking on top. Aqara describes it as a retrofit, keyless solution for home access management, and says fitting it over the existing lock needs no tool apart from a screwdriver1.
Before you buy, two things decide whether it will work in your home. Your door needs a cylinder with an emergency function, meaning one that can be unlocked from the outside with a key even if another key is left in the inside2. And if you want to control it remotely, you need an Aqara M3 hub or another Matter-equipped Thread Border Router3. The lock itself runs on a rechargeable battery, with a claimed life of up to 6 months at about 8 unlocks a day4.
This page sets out what the lock does, what it needs from your door, how to fit and run it, how to get in when the battery is flat, and how to set access for guests, cleaners and carers.
What the Aqara Smart Lock U200 is and who it suits
The U200 is a smart lock that sits on the inside of your door and turns the existing thumbturn, with a wireless keypad mounted outside for codes. Aqara calls it a retrofit lock, and the point of that design is that you do not swap the lock itself: the maker says attaching the U200 over the existing lock is simple and requires no tool apart from a screwdriver1. It is one of the first Matter-over-Thread locks to support home key unlocking, and it uses the energy-efficient Thread protocol, which Aqara says is designed for extended use1.
That makes it a reasonable fit for a household that wants keyless entry, codes for visitors and phone unlocking without changing the door or paying a locksmith to fit a new lock body. It is less suited to a door where you cannot meet the cylinder requirement, or where nobody wants to manage an app, a hub and a battery.
The lock is part of the wider choice covered in Smart Locks: How They Work and What to Check, and the door hardware it depends on is set out in Doors and Locks: Standards, Cylinders and Making Entry Harder. Which.co.uk notes that smart locks generally need firmware updates, need the internet for features like remote unlocking, and cost more than traditional locks, with batteries lasting from six months to a couple of years before they need replacing or recharging7. Those are the running costs in time, not money, that any smart lock brings.
Your door needs a cylinder with an emergency function
This is the one requirement that decides whether the U200 can go on your door at all. Aqara states that the lock fits over existing locks without modifications, but requires a cylinder with an Emergency Function2. In practice that means a cylinder that lets you unlock from the outside with a key even when another key is inserted on the inside2. The maker's own description is that the Emergency Function enables the cylinder to be unlocked from the outside using a key, even if another key is already inserted on the inside1.
Why it matters: the U200 turns the existing lock from the inside. If someone leaves a key in the inside of a cylinder that does not have this function, a key from outside may not work, and you could be locked out of your own home. The emergency function is what keeps the mechanical key as a reliable fallback.
If your cylinder does not have it, Aqara sells adjustable cylinders separately1. Measuring before you order is covered in How to Measure a Euro Cylinder, and the standards a replacement should meet are in What British Standard Should Your Door Lock Meet?.
Fitting it yourself: about 20 minutes with a screwdriver
Aqara says the lock fits over existing locks without drilling or screwing, and that detailed instructions let users and professionals install it using simple, readily available hand tools2. Owners report a straightforward job: one review describes simple installation in about 20 minutes, with no drilling and no cylinder change4. That is an owner's experience, not a guarantee, and it assumes your door already meets the cylinder requirement.
The maker's fitting guidance for the lock covers single-cylinder deadbolt locks with backsets of 60 mm and 70 mm, and calls for a PH1 screwdriver4. If you are in the UK and your door is a different pattern, check the cylinder and door type before ordering.
A few practical points from owners:
- The inner unit runs on a rechargeable battery charged by USB-C, and the outer unit on two AAA batteries, with the charge level shown in the app and an acoustic signal when batteries need changing3.
- The UK version includes an AAA battery adapter for the cylinder, which one owner noted is not supplied with the German model3.
- Where there is no surface for screw mounting, one owner used the included adhesive pad and reports it holds reliably, though a key must remain permanently in the cylinder in that set-up3.
That last point is worth pausing on: an adhesive mount is an owner's workaround, not the maker's fitting method, and it depends on the cylinder requirement being met.
Battery life: up to 6 months at 8 unlocks a day

Aqara's headline figure is up to 6 months of battery life, based on approximately 8 daily unlocks via fingerprint or NFC4. The same figure appears in the launch material, which describes up to 6 months between each charge based on 8 cycles of unlocking and locking per day1. The M3 hub bundle page gives the same 6 months and credits Matter over Thread with reducing power consumption to help reach it3.
Real use varies widely, and the maker says so. Across its smart lock range, Aqara gives a maximum battery life of 8 to 18 months, noting that cold temperatures and frequent use can shorten it8. Owners report a spread:
| Use pattern | Reported battery life | Source |
|---|---|---|
| One-person household | Over 1 year | 4 |
| Intensive use, about 30 uses a day | Battery level still at 90 percent after two months | 4 |
| Maker's stated basis | Up to 6 months at about 8 unlocks a day | 4 |
The lesson is that the 6 month figure is a planning number, not a promise. A busy household with a dog walker, a carer and children coming and going will get through charge faster than a single occupant. The app shows the charge level and the lock gives an acoustic signal when the batteries need changing or charging4, so the practical routine is to check the app when you think of it and act on the warning rather than wait for a lockout.
Getting in when the battery runs flat or the power is out
The U200 is designed so that a flat battery does not lock you out, but you need to know the routes before you need them.
The lock takes an Aqara Rechargeable Li-ion Battery at 7.4V, or 4 LR6 1.5V batteries6. The keypad takes 4 LR3 AAA 1.5V batteries, or can be wired to a 12V to 24V AC 0.5A 50/60Hz supply or a 12V to 24V DC 0.5A input6. Aqara says the lock works seamlessly while charging, and the included power bank pouch attaches to the door handle so you can charge and use it at the same time2. The USB-C port is exposed when you remove the front panel, and the carry case lets you charge from a power bank without taking the battery out5.
Your fallback is the mechanical key. Aqara lists traditional keys as emergency access with the original keys1, and the lock supports mechanical keys alongside PIN codes, fingerprint recognition and the Aqara Home app3. Keep a key somewhere sensible, which is covered in Keys: Spares, Hiding Places and Lost Sets.
The wider question of how smart locks behave in an outage is covered in Do Smart Locks Work in a Power Cut?, and battery expectations in How Long Do Smart Lock Batteries Last?.
Unlocking by fingerprint, PIN, phone, NFC card or key
The U200 offers several ways in, and they suit different people. Aqara lists mechanical keys, PIN codes, fingerprint recognition and Aqara Home app integration3, and the launch material adds Apple home keys, mobile apps and voice assistants, Aqara NFC cards and traditional keys1.
- Fingerprint: up to 50 fingerprints can be stored5, and Aqara's fingerprint service supports up to 50 unique users across its range8.
- PIN codes: up to 100 unique passcodes, each 6 to 10 digits long5. Anti-peep PIN protection is included1.
- Phone and watch: the NFC module lets you unlock with an iPhone or Apple Watch even when the phone or watch is powered off3.
- NFC card: Aqara NFC cards are supported1. One owner linked a guest NFC chip to a Samsung SmartTag so it could be found if taken by mistake4.
- Key: the original mechanical key remains the emergency route1.
There are limits worth knowing. The lock does not support most standard NFC tags; Aqara NFC tags work best, and Mifare NFC tags will work5. For Apple Home Key you need an Apple home hub such as a HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV5. After HomeKit integration, one owner found a Home key was created automatically in Apple Wallet, usable like an NFC key, including via Apple Watch4.
The lock also has a quiet unlock mode, activated from the keypad and working independently of any hub or Thread border router, which turns the motor slowly for reduced noise4.
Codes and access for guests, cleaners and carers
This is where a smart lock earns its place in a household with people coming and going. Aqara offers offline passwords, which are one-time passwords, and periodic passwords4. The launch material describes one-time passwords that can be remotely created, shared and used even when the lock is disconnected from any platforms1.

In practice that means you can give a carer a code that works only on the days and hours they visit. One owner set up a unique code for their cleaner that only works on Mondays between 9 AM and 5 PM4. Another says temporary PINs for guests simplify access and remove the need to hand out physical keys4.
For a household managing care, this pairs well with the arrangements in Key Safes: Letting Carers and Responders In and Extra Help in an Emergency: Older, Disabled and Medically Dependent Households. A code that expires is one fewer key in circulation, and one fewer key to lose.
Firmware updates and reported problems

The U200 receives features and fixes over the air. Aqara says some features may not be available at launch and will be added through subsequent OTA updates1. Firmware updates can be loaded directly in the Aqara app without owning an Aqara hub4.
There have been problems. One owner reported that the firmware update to version 3.0.0_0080 caused the lock to turn without engaging, fail to calibrate and repeatedly report that the bolt was not fully extended or retracted; that firmware version was withdrawn4. The same owner later reported that problems with firmware version 084 were mostly solved, though their lock still made noises or sometimes turned without engaging on unlocking4. Another owner, using Home Assistant, reported closing problems after about three months and received a replacement device the next day after contacting support through the app4.
If your lock starts behaving oddly after an update, the sensible order is: check the app for a newer firmware version, recalibrate, then contact support. Aqara's support responded the next day and sent a replacement without fuss in the case reported4.

Where to get help
Support is reached through the Aqara app. In the case reported, support replied the next day and sent a replacement device without fuss after about three months of closing problems4. Before you contact them, check the app for a firmware update and try recalibrating, since some reported faults were fixed by later firmware4.
