Arlo is a smart security brand: cameras, video doorbells and floodlights that send alerts to your phone and let you watch your home from wherever you are. It is part of Verisure, a monitored alarm company, and its UK shop sells direct with free delivery and free returns1. For a household thinking about emergencies, the useful question is narrower than "is it good": what does this kit do when the power goes off, when a storm takes out the broadband, or when you are away and something happens at home?
The short answer is that Arlo is a watch-and-tell system, not a life-safety system. Arlo describes its cameras as offering "Advanced surveillance with alarm-level deterrence, including spotlight, siren and two-way audio"1. It is a sensible addition to a home security plan and a poor substitute for a smoke alarm, a carbon monoxide alarm or a torch.
Two things matter before you buy. First, Arlo's software support will end between December 2028 and December 2029, depending on the model, according to Which?2. Second, without a Secure plan you lose the advanced AI features after your trial3. Both are worth knowing now rather than discovering later.
What Arlo makes for UK homes
Arlo describes itself as an award-winning smart security ecosystem for homes and small businesses, delivering protection through cameras, video doorbells and floodlights1. In practice that means three families of kit: indoor and outdoor cameras, doorbells that replace or sit beside your front-door bell, and camera units with built-in floodlights. All of it works through the Arlo app and your home Wi-Fi, and it works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit on supported devices1.
For emergency planning, the value is in awareness. A camera covering a back garden, a side gate or a downstairs room tells you what is happening when you are not there, and a doorbell lets you speak to someone at the door without opening it. Arlo's own framing is deterrence: it advertises "alarm-level deterrence, including spotlight, siren and two-way audio"1. That is a deterrent against intrusion, not a warning system for fire, flood or gas.
The limits are worth stating plainly. The kit needs mains power and a working internet connection to do most of what it does, so in a power cut or broadband outage you should expect it to stop reporting. It is not a substitute for mains-powered smoke and heat alarms, and it is not a substitute for a carbon monoxide alarm. Treat it as one layer of a home security plan, alongside locks, lighting and neighbours who know you.
Arlo also sells a hub, the Arlo SmartHub, which connects compatible Arlo cameras and doorbells through your home router and unlocks local video storage3. That matters for preparedness because local storage keeps recordings in your house rather than in the cloud, and it keeps some functions working in a different way from a purely cloud setup. The two versions are the Arlo Pro SmartHub, which unlocks USB local video storage, and the Arlo Ultra SmartHub, which unlocks MicroSD local video storage3.
Arlo is part of Verisure
Arlo is part of Verisure, which Arlo describes as a global leader in monitored alarm systems1. The two are presented as complementary rather than competing: Arlo delivers intelligent video surveillance, while Verisure provides professional alarm monitoring and rapid response1. Arlo says it integrates seamlessly with Verisure, describing it as Europe's leading monitored alarm provider1.
What does that mean for a household? If you already have a monitored alarm, Arlo cameras can sit alongside it as the eyes, with the alarm company providing the response. If you do not, Arlo on its own is a self-monitored system: alerts come to your phone and you decide what to do. That is a real difference in an emergency. A self-monitored camera can tell you a door has opened; it will not call anyone for you.
Arlo's higher plans lean into that gap. The Early Warning System is described as being able to trigger all sirens when an unknown person is detected, or call emergency services directly7. Those are the maker's descriptions of paid features, so check exactly what is included in the plan you choose before you rely on it.
For preparedness, the sensible reading is this: buy Arlo for awareness and deterrence, and keep your emergency arrangements separate. Your smoke alarms, your carbon monoxide alarm, your torch and your emergency kit should not depend on a subscription or a working router.
Security cameras

Arlo's cameras are the core of the range. The Arlo Pro 6 is a 2K+ model that Arlo says captures full colour video 24/7, with a 4 megapixel sensor, motion and audio detection, colour and infrared night vision, and indoor or outdoor use7. The Arlo Essential 3 2K Camera offers 2K, 1080p and 720p video modes with a 4 megapixel sensor and cloud storage8. The Arlo Essential 3 Indoor Camera is the indoor version, with 2K, 1080p and 720p modes and a built-in siren3. The Arlo Ultra 2 and Arlo Ultra 3 sit at the top of the range, and the Ultra 3 has a spotlight4.
A few specifications decide how useful a camera is in bad weather and bad light. Arlo says its outdoor cameras are built for all-weather protection, with durable IP65-rated designs that withstand heat, cold, rain, snow and sun1. All Arlo cameras include night vision, and select models offer colour night vision1. The Pro 6 recognises people, vehicles, animals, packages and even fire7. That fire detection is a useful extra, but it is a camera feature, not a smoke alarm, and it should never replace one.
| Camera | Video | Sensor | Notable for emergencies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arlo Pro 6 | 2K+ | 4 megapixels | Full colour 24/7, fire detection, indoor and outdoor7 |
| Arlo Essential 3 2K | 2K, 1080p, 720p | 4 megapixels | Cloud storage, 2K detail8 |
| Arlo Essential 3 Indoor | 2K, 1080p, 720p | Not stated | Indoor use3 |
| Arlo Ultra 3 | Not stated | Not stated | Spotlight4 |
Arlo says outdoor surveillance cameras can be used indoors4, which is worth knowing if you want to watch a hallway or a room where a vulnerable person lives. Privacy zones prevent cameras recording footage in certain designated areas4, which is the setting to use if a camera would otherwise look into a neighbour's garden or a public footpath.
Video doorbells
The Arlo Essential 2K Wireless Video Doorbell and the Arlo Essential Wireless Video Doorbell FHD are both described by Arlo as 4-in-1 video doorbells5. Both have 12x digital zoom, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, two-way audio and cloud storage5. Both carry an integrated 80 dB siren, and Arlo states that the Arlo Video Doorbell is the only video doorbell with a built-in siren based on publicly available information as of May 20265. That is the maker's claim, dated, and worth reading as a claim rather than a fact.
For a household, a doorbell earns its place in two ways. It lets you see and speak to a caller without opening the door, which is useful if you are alone, unwell or simply cautious. And it gives you a record of callers, which is useful after an incident. The 80 dB siren is a deterrent you can trigger from your phone, not a fire alarm.
| Feature | Essential Wireless Video Doorbell FHD | Essential 2K Wireless Video Doorbell |
|---|---|---|
| Video modes | 1536 x 1536, 1080 x 10805 | 2K6 |
| Digital zoom | 12x5 | 12x6 |
| Connectivity | 2.4GHz Wi-Fi5 | 2.4GHz Wi-Fi6 |
| Siren | 80 dB5 | 80 dB6 |
| Spotlight | Not stated | No6 |
| Storage | Cloud5 | Cloud6 |
| Returns | 30 day free returns5 | 30 day free returns6 |
The doorbells connect to smart home systems including Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT, SmartThings and HomeKit, with HomeKit requiring a SmartHub8. If you already run a smart speaker, that integration is the difference between a notification and an announcement in the kitchen.
One practical warning: a doorbell is fixed to your door and wired or battery powered, so it is exposed to the weather and to the front of the house. If you live in a flood-risk area, think about where the cable runs and how you would isolate power to the door before water arrives. The flooding guide covers the wider preparation.
Floodlights
Arlo's floodlight cameras combine a camera with a light. The Arlo Pro 6 and Arlo Ultra 3 both list a spotlight4, and the Essential 3 2K camera has a built-in spotlight, colour night vision and a built-in siren3. The point of a floodlight in a preparedness plan is not decoration: it lights the path to the gas meter, the stopcock or the fuse box when the power is out, and it makes an intruder visible.

There is a live recall in this category that every household should know about, though it is not an Arlo product. Electrical Safety First has published a recall of a Square LED Floodlight luminaire, model 6F09, with carton numbers G759-ZT1502022 and RVG759-230224-0001-15010. Check any floodlight you already own against that notice. Electrical Safety First also warns that there are potentially millions of recalled electrical items still in UK homes11, so it is worth checking your appliances generally.
Where your footage is stored: EU-based cloud
Arlo says it uses secure EU-based cloud storage and never volunteers your personal data to authorities1. Recordings can be saved locally using a compatible Arlo base station, or securely in Europe-based cloud storage with an Arlo Secure plan1. The camera captures footage, and sound if activated, which is transmitted through a Wi-Fi connection to cloud servers, and the footage is encrypted to protect your videos in the cloud4.
That gives a household a genuine choice, and it is the choice that matters most for privacy.
- Cloud storage: convenient, survives the theft of the camera, and Arlo argues there is no risk of videos being stolen from an SD card7. It needs a working internet connection and, for most features, a paid plan.
- Local storage: pair the camera with an Arlo SmartHub to unlock local video storage, using USB on the Pro SmartHub or MicroSD on the Ultra SmartHub3. The footage stays in your house, which is an advantage in an outage and a disadvantage if the hub itself is taken.

The plans differ mainly in how much history you keep. Arlo Secure Lite+ Monthly includes 3 days cloud storage, custom detection zones, basic person, package, vehicle and motion detection, theft replacement, and is limited to one camera or doorbell5. Arlo Secure Plus is available with up to 20 cameras and includes advanced AI to detect known people and vehicles, fire detection, cloud video storage, package detection, custom detection zones and replacement of cameras if they are stolen7.
Without a subscription, Arlo says you still have motion alerts, doorbell calls, live streaming, local storage with an Arlo Hub or Base Station, schedules and arrive/leave automations, three modes to automate actions based on motion, deterrence features including spotlight, siren and two-way audio, and auto zoom and tracking12. After a trial ends, the features available without a Secure plan include live video streaming with no cloud storage and basic motion detection5. In plain terms: the camera still works, but you lose the recording history and the smarter alerts.
Software support ends by model: check yours
This is the section to read before you buy, and again a year later. Which? reports that Arlo's support will end between December 2028 and December 2029, depending on the model2. That is a brand-wide window, not a date for each product, so the model you choose determines where in that window you sit. Which? also lists the software update period for the Arlo 2K Wireless Video Doorbell as unknown2.
Why does it matter for preparedness? A camera that no longer receives security updates is a small computer on your network that no longer gets fixes. The National Cyber Security Centre sets out that smart devices are now covered by law, which is a floor, not a guarantee of long life13. Electrical Safety First's advice for smart homes is direct: check whether a smart device will get regular software updates, and how long after purchase it will continue to be supported14.

The practical steps are simple. Note the model number of anything you buy and the date you bought it. Diarise a check each year against Arlo's support information. If a camera is still working but out of support, decide whether to keep it on your network, and keep it off the network that carries anything sensitive. And if you are buying now, ask Arlo directly for the support end date of the specific model, because the published window is wide.
Buying and returning through Arlo UK

Arlo's UK online shop advertises free delivery and free returns1. Standard delivery takes 4 to 5 business days, or you can choose Express for next-day delivery if the order is placed before 11 AM4. The Essential Wireless Video Doorbell FHD page lists free shipping and returns and 30 day free returns5, and the Essential 2K Wireless Video Doorbell page lists 30 day free returns6.
If you take a subscription with your order, the timing is worth understanding. Arlo says your free month will start 7 days after your order date, and if you receive your cameras before the 7 days you will still have access to the Secure Plan features7. The plan start date is order date plus 7 days to allow for delivery8. On a monthly plan the first payment is one month after the plan start date; on an annual plan it is 12 months after the plan start date7.
Cancelling has consequences. Arlo says that if you cancel you will no longer have access to any videos previously stored on your account, you will also lose access to advanced AI features and the theft replacement service, and access is maintained up until the date of renewal7. The Secure AI Annual Plan can be cancelled within the first 30 days after delivery with a refund request to customer support and return of any discounted products, and is non-refundable after 30 days7.
A few buying points for a household:
- Buy from a retailer you trust. Electrical Safety First recommends buying electrical goods either direct from the manufacturer's website or from a trusted high street name9.
- Do not import. Electrical Safety First recommends you do not bring home electrical products purchased from outside the UK, and notes that travel adaptors are not a suitable or safe alternative to a conversion plug11.
- Check stock before you plan. Arlo's own pages show some bundles out of stock, including the Pro 6 with Solar Panels7 and the Essential 3 Camera with Video Doorbell 2K6. If a bundle is unavailable, the individual items may still be in stock.
- Existing customers manage plans differently. Arlo's introductory plan offers are only available to new customers; existing customers select Cameras Only and manage their Secure plan at my.arlo.com7.
Support, warranty and safety notices
Arlo's support is tiered by plan. The Secure Plus and Secure Pro plans include VIP customer support, described as fast, personalised support from dedicated technical experts via phone or live chat12. On lower plans, support is the standard route through the Arlo account and help pages. If you are relying on the kit in an emergency, the plan you choose decides how quickly you can get help with it.
On safety, the general rules for any smart home kit apply. Electrical Safety First advises checking whether a smart device will get regular software updates and how long it will be supported14, and the National Cyber Security Centre explains that smart device security is now backed by law13. Neither is Arlo-specific, but both bear on a camera you intend to keep for years.
There is no Arlo warranty period stated in the material here, so check the warranty terms on the Arlo UK site or with the retailer at the point of sale, and keep your order confirmation. For any electrical product, Electrical Safety First's recall pages are the place to check a model number, and it warns that potentially millions of recalled electrical items remain in UK homes11.
If you are building the wider plan around the kit, the home security guide sets out locks, lighting and routines, and the power cuts guide explains what to expect when the mains goes off and how to keep essential equipment running. A camera is one layer; the plan is what carries you through.
