Gas supply loss hits Coatbridge ML5 4 area

SGN said it was responding to multiple reports of pressure problems and no gas in the ML5 4** postcode area, covering homes in the Carnbroe area of Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, on Thursday 8 January 2026. The network operator said its engineers were on site and that, for safety, teams were visiting affected properties to temporarily turn off gas supplies at the meter1.

In its 5pm update on 8 January, SGN said it was too early to give a confirmed timescale for restoring supplies. It said electric hot plates and heaters were available for vulnerable customers, including elderly people and households with young children, and that its team was available in person at Riverbank Community Hub in Paddock Street, Coatbridge (ML5 4PG) until approximately 8pm that day. The customer service team could be contacted on 0800 912 17171.

By 10.45pm on 8 January, SGN said it had visited all affected properties and engineers were completing repair work to the local gas network. It said restoration would begin that night with visits to priority customers who need extra support, and that teams would return from 7am on Friday 9 January to revisit remaining properties. The community hub was to reopen at 9.30am on 9 January1.

At 3.15pm on 9 January, SGN said it had visited all affected homes to restore supplies, but had been unable to gain access to some properties and was revisiting them that afternoon. In its final update at 8pm on 9 January, it said supplies had been restored to over 850 properties, with just a handful of homes still without gas because engineers had been unable to access them. The customer centre had closed1.

"For safety reasons, please do not attempt to turn your gas supply back on yourself."

SGN asked anyone who was out when engineers called to follow the instructions on the card left at the property to arrange a visit to turn the supply back on1.

Why it matters for households

The incident affected homes in the ML5 4** postcode area of Coatbridge from Thursday 8 January 2026. SGN turned supplies off at the meter as an essential step to allow repair work and safe restoration, and said it was too early on the first evening to give a confirmed timescale1. Households without gas during cold weather lose both heating and cooking, which is why SGN offered electric hot plates and heaters to vulnerable customers, including elderly people and households with young children1. SGN's advice was not to attempt to turn the gas supply back on, and for anyone who missed an engineer's visit to contact the company using the card left behind1. The company's customer service line was 0800 912 1717, and the national gas emergency number for a smell of gas is 0800 111 9991.

What happens next

SGN said its customer centre had closed and that the 8pm update on Friday 9 January would be its final one. A handful of homes remained without gas where engineers had not been able to gain access; SGN asked those households to follow the card instructions to rearrange a visit to have the supply turned back on1. No further timescale for those remaining properties has been reported.

Households dealing with a loss of supply can read the guide to gas and heating failures, including what to do when the mains supply to your home goes off and getting your supply back on after an outage.
