SEPA issues flood warnings across the Western Isles ahead of high tides

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has issued flood warnings across the Western Isles in response to sustained challenging weather conditions and high tides scheduled for the evening of 27 October 2026, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar announced the same day1.

The Comhairle said it had worked closely with partners to control traffic and clear flooding related debris from roads and causeways during the day, and that it would continue to monitor the situation and respond as required1. It also said live feeds of the Baleshare Causeway and the Bràighe could be viewed on the Comhairle website1. The announcement did not give the number of warnings in force, the areas covered beyond the Western Isles as a whole, or any estimate of damage. Those details have not been reported1.

In its own words, the Comhairle said:

"Members of the public are encouraged to take care while travelling especially if journeys involve travel across causeways, culverts or through areas covered by the flood warnings."

The Comhairle directed readers to SEPA's live flooding information page for current warnings1. SEPA's three-tier system of flood alerts, flood warnings and severe flood warnings is explained in the site's guide, and the particular risks of coastal flooding, tidal surges and erosion are set out separately.

Why it matters for households

The warnings apply across the Western Isles and are tied to high tides due this evening, 27 October 20261. Households whose travel involves causeways, culverts or areas covered by the warnings are the group the Comhairle singled out, and its advice is to take care while travelling1. Roads and causeways in the area have already needed traffic control and clearing of flooding related debris during the day1. The Comhairle has not said how long the warnings will remain in force, and no expiry time has been reported1.

For households preparing when a warning is issued, the site's checklist when a flood warning is issued covers the practical steps, and how to sign up for free flood warnings explains how to receive SEPA notices directly. Households in flood risk areas can read about home insurance and Flood Re, and about flood doors and flood windows where property measures are being considered. The wider flooding hub gathers these guides.

What happens next

The Comhairle said it will continue to monitor the situation and respond as required1. No further update, all-clear time or assessment of damage has been reported1.
