Safety alert issued over GDHA gas range cookers carbon monoxide risk

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) published a Gas Safe Register safety alert on 11 November 2022 covering certain models of gas range cookers manufactured by Glen Dimplex Home Appliances (GDHA)1. The alert is addressed to Gas Safe registered businesses and engineers as well as members of the public1.

The warning states that the cookers can pose a serious risk of carbon monoxide poisoning until a critical modification has been made1. The alert does not, in the text published by HSENI, name the affected models or set out the modification itself; it directs readers to the full safety alert, Safety Alert 030, published on the Gas Safe Register website1.

"Consumers are warned that these products can pose a serious risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, until a critical modification has been made."

On continued use before the fix, the alert says customers can keep using the grill on their gas range cookers, but only as set out in the instruction manual, and must ensure the grill door is left fully open while the gas grill is in operation1.

Why it matters for households

The alert concerns households with a GDHA gas range cooker of the kind covered by Safety Alert 030. Carbon monoxide is produced by incomplete burning of gas, and the alert describes the risk as serious until the modification has been carried out1. The practical position set out by HSENI is that the grill can still be used before the fix, but only in line with the instruction manual and with the grill door fully open throughout1. The alert gives no date by which the modification must be made, and no recall or replacement programme is described in the published text1.

Households wanting to check whether their cooker is affected, or to understand what the modification involves, are directed by the alert to the full Safety Alert 030 document on the Gas Safe Register website1. The general warning signs of unsafe gas appliances, and what to do if a supply is cut off, are set out in the guide to unsafe appliances. The symptoms to watch for are described in the guide to carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms, and the role of alarms is covered in carbon monoxide alarms: what they do and how to choose, with placement covered in where to put a carbon monoxide alarm. Wider household planning is covered in the home emergencies hub and the gas and heating failures hub.

What happens next

The alert gives no timetable for the modification and no further steps beyond directing readers to Safety Alert 030 on the Gas Safe Register website1. No recall, repair scheme or deadline has been reported in the published alert1.
