The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) published a recall notice on 22 February 2024 covering the Ideal Heating Logic 2 Combi and System boiler range, which it says presents a risk of fire1. The notice describes the hazard as dry operation, "meaning the boiler lights gas but the heat generated does not cool it"1. It records three incidents of boilers continuing to operate when the heat exchanger was full of air at low pressure, allowing the heat exchanger and associated plastic components to reach significant heat, with the plastic flashing to flame and resulting in fire outside the appliance1. There has also been a report of a customer having to extinguish flames1.
The corrective action is a modification programme. The notice states:
"Ideal has launched a modification programme to address the safety risk"
The same notice says Ideal has advised that customers can continue to use their boiler, which should be repressurised to 1.5 bar, with instructions in the Ideal safety notice1. The notice does not give a timetable for the modification programme, and no completion date has been reported1.
Why it matters for households
The recall covers households in the UK with any of the 30 listed Logic 2, Logic Max 2, Logic+ 2, Independent 2, Keston 2 or I Mini2 combi and system boilers made before 8 January 20241. The risk arises when a boiler runs dry at low pressure, so pressure is central to the notice: Ideal's advice, as reported by the OPSS, is that boilers can continue in use and should be repressurised to 1.5 bar1. The OPSS lists the measure as a recall of the product from end users1. Households wanting to check their model and part number can compare the boiler's identification against the table above, and the Ideal Heating page covers the maker's range. Households whose boiler has lost pressure can follow the steps in how to repressurise a combi boiler, and the gas and heating failures hub covers what to do when heating or hot water stops. The checks to make before calling a boiler engineer page sets out the basic checks, and households weighing a replacement can read Combi or System Boiler: Which Keeps Hot Water Going in an Outage.
What happens next
The OPSS notice gives no date for when the modification programme begins or ends, and no date by which affected boilers will be modified has been reported1. The notice directs households to the Ideal safety notice for repressurising instructions1.
