Gas supplies lost to around 1,290 Kincardine properties after network damage

Gas supplies to approximately 1,290 properties in the Kincardine area of Fife were affected by damage to the gas network, SGN reported on 15 October 2024. The network operator said its engineers were on site to establish the cause and the extent of the issue, and that an emergency repair to its gas main had begun that afternoon1.

SGN said it was visiting every affected property to turn off the gas supply at the meter while the repair was under way, and that it was too early to say when supplies could be restored1. The operator opened a customer centre at Kincardine Community Centre on Anderson Lane, with its customer service team there from 1pm on 15 October1.

Reconnection began on 16 October, with engineers visiting each property to carry out safety checks and reinstate supplies1. By 5.30pm that day SGN said engineers had visited more than half of the affected properties, and that visits would continue into the evening with priority given to households on the Priority Services Register1. On the morning of 17 October the operator said just over 300 homes had not been reached; by 4.30pm that figure was over 100, and SGN described that update as its final one1.

SGN stated that each household would receive £70 for each complete 24-hour period that gas was not available. It said the compensation is paid through the energy supplier as a credit on the next bill, is paid automatically without an application, and usually arrives within four weeks1.

Why it matters for households

Households in the affected area lost mains gas, and with it the usual supply for gas cooking, hot water and central heating. SGN advised residents not to try to use their gas supply during the outage, and not to turn it off or back on themselves, but to wait for an engineer1. It said anyone who smells gas at any time, indoors or outdoors, should call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 right away1. Households that were out when an engineer called were told a card would be left with ways to rearrange a visit, and those still waiting to be reconnected could call SGN on 0800 912 17171. SGN said its customer service team would contact households registered on the Priority Services Register to ensure they were supported while without gas1. Our guides on what to do when the mains supply goes off and on getting your supply back on after an outage cover the practical steps, and the gas and heating failures guide sets out the wider picture for households.

What happens next

SGN said its customer hub at the Community Centre would close at 5pm on 17 October, after which residents could speak to the team on the 24-hour number1. It said engineers would continue revisiting all affected properties to restore supplies, and asked anyone not yet reconnected to call 0800 912 1717 to arrange a visit1. The operator has not reported a cause for the network damage.
