OPSS issues grill safety warning for GDHA gas range cookers

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) issued a safety warning on 15 August 2022 about the use of gas grills on certain Belling, Stoves and New World gas range cookers manufactured by Glen Dimplex Home Appliances (GDHA)1. The OPSS states that if the gas grill is used with the door closed, there is a risk that dangerous levels of carbon monoxide can build up, posing a significant risk of serious injury or death to those within the immediate environment1. The product safety report records the risk level as serious and states that the product does not meet the requirements of the Gas Appliances (Enforcement) and Miscellaneous Amendments Regulations 20182.

The models affected include 110, 100 and 90cm models, and products in scope were purchased at any time between 2010 and 20222. A full list of model numbers and images of affected products is provided in the product safety report2. The OPSS has issued safety requirements to GDHA, who are writing to all consumers reminding them to only use their gas grill with the grill door fully open1. The OPSS has also required GDHA and retailers to remove the product from the market with immediate effect2.

"I urge consumers to ensure the door is always kept fully open when the grill is in operation and remind all consumers of the importance of following the safety instructions for their gas cookers. Glen Dimplex has issued this warning following instructions from OPSS. We will monitor their actions and hold them to account."
Office for Product Safety and Standards Chief Executive Graham Russell1

The product safety report was updated on 2 November 2022 with details of a modification programme launched on Wednesday 2 November 20222. GDHA have initiated a modification programme for products in scope of the safety issue2. Consumers must call 0800 110 5728 or email consumersupport@glendimplex.com to register for the free modification, and in the meantime must only use the gas grill with the grill door open2. The OPSS states that if you no longer own the product, it is still important that you contact Glen Dimplex to enable them to trace the new owner2. The original warning directed consumers to GDHA on 0800 110 5728 or via the Belling, Stoves and New World websites1.

Why it matters for households

The warning covers households in the UK with a Belling, Stoves or New World gas range cooker with a gas grill bought at any time between 2010 and 2022, including second owners of affected appliances2. The hazard arises only when the grill is used with the door closed; the OPSS and GDHA state that until the free modification has been completed, the grill must only be used with the grill door open1. The OPSS advises consumers to follow the safety instructions for their gas cookers1. Carbon monoxide is not detectable by smell or sight, and the site's guide to carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms sets out the signs to be aware of, while carbon monoxide alarms: what they do and how to choose and where to put a carbon monoxide alarm cover alarm provision and placement. The wider home emergencies guide covers fire, carbon monoxide, gas leaks and burst pipes.

What happens next

GDHA are writing to all consumers reminding them to use the gas grill only with the door fully open1. The modification programme launched on 2 November 2022, and consumers register for the free modification by calling 0800 110 5728 or emailing consumersupport@glendimplex.com2. The OPSS states it will monitor GDHA's actions and hold them to account1. No completion date for the modification programme has been reported.
