Extreme wildfire risk warning issued for north-west Scotland

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) issued a wildfire warning on 2 May 2024 identifying an extreme risk of wildfire across north-west Scotland, with the warning in place from Friday 3 May until Saturday 4 May1. The rest of Scotland has a very high risk of wildfire during the same period1. SFRS issues wildfire warnings in conjunction with the Scottish Wildfire Forum1.

The service said the extreme danger assessment affects the northwest of the country1. It urged people who live within or are visiting rural environments to exercise caution1. Group Commander Niall MacLennan, one of SFRS's Wildfire Tactical Advisors, said wildfires can burn for days, devastate vast areas of land and wildlife, and threaten the welfare of nearby communities1. He said many rural and remote communities are hugely impacted by wildfires, which can cause significant damage, and that such fires can destroy wildlife and habitat, including protected woodlands and sites of special scientific interest, as well as affecting the lives of people living and working in rural communities1.

"We are asking the public to exercise extreme caution and think twice before using anything involving a naked flame."

MacLennan said human behaviour can significantly lower the chance of a wildfire starting, and that it is crucial that people act safely and responsibly in rural environments and always follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code1.

Why it matters for households

The warning covers anyone living in or visiting rural parts of north-west Scotland on 3 and 4 May 2024, and applies to the rest of Scotland at a lower but still very high level of risk over the same two days1. SFRS has asked the public to exercise extreme caution and to think twice before using anything involving a naked flame, and to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code in rural environments1. The service says wildfires can burn for days, damage land and wildlife including protected woodlands and sites of special scientific interest, and threaten nearby communities1. The guide to wildfires and grass fires sets out risk and prevention information for households, and sits within the wider heatwaves and drought section.

What happens next

The warning runs until Saturday 4 May 20241. No further assessment beyond that period has been reported.
