SSEN moves to Yellow Alert status ahead of Storm Bram in north of Scotland

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) moved to "Yellow Alert" preparedness status in the north of Scotland ahead of Storm Bram, the company announced on 8 December 2025. The storm, named by the Irish Met Office, is forecast to run from Tuesday afternoon through to Wednesday morning1.

Forecasts indicate storm-force winds gusting up to 90mph across the Western Isles, West and Northwest Highlands and Skye, with strong winds expected elsewhere in the region and heavy rain also forecast1. The Met Office has issued its own Amber and Yellow Warnings for Tuesday and Wednesday1. SSEN said the alert level reflects the strong likelihood that these winds will affect customers' power supplies, and that moving to the status means contingency plans have been activated, with teams in strategic locations ready to respond to network damage and faults1.

"We've contactednearly 180,000 customers in the areas most likely to be affected, to offer advice and check on their welfare ahead of Storm Bram's arrival."

SSEN said its specialist Priority Services team is in the process of contacting customers already registered for free support during a power cut1. The company lists eligibility for its Priority Services as: being deaf or hard of hearing; having a disability; living with children under five; being blind or partially sighted; having a chronic illness; using medical equipment or aids reliant on electricity; or being over 601. SSEN can be contacted about Priority Services on 0800 294 32591.

SSEN encouraged customers to save the emergency power cut number, 105, to report any loss of supply or damage to the electricity network, and to use its Power Track website for details of power cuts and restoration times1. It asked anyone who sees damage to its equipment to stay back, not touch it, and report it by calling 105 or via Power Track1. The company said it will continue to monitor the weather closely and issue further updates depending on the forecast1.

Why it matters for households

Households across the Western Isles, West and Northwest Highlands and Skye face the strongest winds, with disruption to power supplies possible from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning; strong winds are expected elsewhere in the region1. SSEN has contacted nearly 180,000 customers in the areas most likely to be affected, and is contacting those already on its Priority Services register1. The Met Office's Amber and Yellow Warnings for Tuesday and Wednesday apply alongside the network alert1. SSEN's advice to customers is to save the 105 number for reporting loss of supply or network damage, to check its Power Track site for cut and restoration details, and to follow its Facebook page (ssencommunity) for updates1. Further detail on the Met Office warnings themselves has not been reported beyond SSEN's reference to Amber and Yellow Warnings for Tuesday and Wednesday1.

What happens next

SSEN said it will continue to monitor the weather closely and issue further updates depending on the forecast1. Its Priority Services team is in the process of contacting registered customers1.
