The Office for Product Safety and Standards published a product recall on 31 October 2024 for Hamilton McBride single, double and king size electric blankets, which it says present a risk of fire. The recall was notified by Local Authority Trading Standards and carries the PSD number 2410-01641.
The blankets are white and were sold in single, double and king sizes, packaged in a white and orange rectangular cardboard box. They were made in China. The affected products are identified by order code and barcode1:
| Product | Order code | Barcode |
|---|---|---|
| Single Heated Blanket 80x150cm | 1424922 | 2000195575350 |
| Double Heated Blanket 120x135cm | 1424926 | 2000195575374 |
| King Size Heated Blanket 142x150cm | 1424928 | 2000195575398 |
The hazard notice states that the heating element in the blankets can overheat, which "could result in the blanket catching fire or burning users". The office says the products do not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 20161.
The corrective action is a recall from end users. The office states:
"Customers are asked to stop using this product immediately and return it to their nearest store, where a full refund will be given."
As an alternative, customers are asked to contact the Quality Discounts customer services team through its contact page or by phone on 0331 630 0695, Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm and Friday 8.45am until 4pm. A Quality Discounts recall page is also given for further information1.
Why it matters for households
The recall covers blankets already sold to households, so the risk applies to blankets in use in the home rather than to stock still on shelves. The office asks customers to stop using the product immediately and return it to their nearest store for a full refund, or to contact Quality Discounts customer services1. The recall notice does not give a number of affected blankets, a list of stores, or a closing date for returns; these have not been reported1.
Households that are unsure whether an electrical product has been recalled can use the site's guide on how to check if an electrical product has been recalled. For general guidance on heated bedding, see electric blanket or heated throw and electric blankets: safe use, checks and when to replace, within the heating and cooking and home emergencies sections.
What happens next
The recall notice sets out the return and refund route and the customer services contact details above. No further timetable, such as a deadline for returns or an update date, is given in the notice1.
