A door lock is the one piece of home security kit that has to work on the worst night of the year, when the storm is up, the power is off and you are not standing by the door to check it. Ultion is a British lock brand built around that idea: its cylinders are designed to resist snapping, drilling, picking and bumping, and to stay locked even when someone attacks them. The maker states that Ultion protects over 3 million British homes1.
For a household getting ready for emergencies, the lock matters in two ways. It is the barrier that keeps working when alarms, lights and phones have failed, and it is the part of the door you may need to replace quickly after a break-in, a flood or a damaged door. Ultion's range covers the cylinder lock itself, a smart lock that adds app control, a padlock that uses the same key, and door furniture2.
This page sets out what each product does, how the lock resists attack, what the approvals mean, and how to keep it working. It does not compare Ultion with other makers, and it gives no prices.
What Ultion makes for a UK household
Ultion's core product is an 11-pin, anti-snap cylinder lock, the barrel that sits in a euro profile door and takes the key4. Around it the maker has built a small range: door furniture under the Ultion Sweet name, from letterplates to handles; a padlock that works with your existing Ultion key6; and a smart lock, the Ultion Nuki, made with Nuki and designed for UK doors2.
The range is deliberately narrow. It is not a general home security catalogue: there are no alarms, cameras or safes here. What it offers a household is the locking hardware itself, plus the parts that make one key work across several doors. The maker states that other doors can be secured with Ultion locks made to work with your unique key2.

Designed to stop break-ins that took under nine seconds
The maker's pitch is blunt: "Too many locks protect for only 9 seconds. Ultion is different."6 The claim is that a standard cylinder can be snapped and the door opened in seconds, and that Ultion is built to prevent that. The 3 Star PLUS is designed to stop snapping, which the maker calls the most common UK forced-entry method, along with picking, bumping and drilling3.
That matters for a household because a lock that fails in seconds gives you no time to react. A lock that holds gives you time to call for help, and gives an intruder a reason to leave. The maker lists six break-in methods the 3 Star PLUS prevents: picking, bumping, drilling, snapping, thermal manipulation and twist attacks9.
The lock is also quick to fit, which matters when a door has been damaged. The maker states that new and replacement Ultion locks are easy to use and install, and one customer reported fitting both external doors in less than five minutes with only a Phillips screwdriver5. Another maker page describes fitting an Ultion lock in 60 seconds10. Treat those as the maker's own reports rather than a guarantee for your door, and use a qualified locksmith if the door or frame is damaged.
How the lock resists snapping, drilling and bending
The 3 Star PLUS is built around a molybdenum core, which the maker states is 25% denser than iron5. Molybdenum also has one of the highest melting points of all pure elements, and the maker uses it for the padlock shackle too, describing it as ductile and resistant to corrosion6. In practice, a denser core is harder to drill through and harder to break apart.
Around the core sit the defences named on the maker's pages:
- Anti-snap: a patented SnapStop fires after a snapping attack, preventing access to and manipulation of the core9.
- Anti-drill: 16 hardened steel points of drill protection on the 3 Star PLUS9, and 20 hardened steel anti-drill plates and pins on the Ultion Smart11.
- Anti-pick and anti-bump: listed as standard protection on the 3 Star PLUS core12.
- Anti-twist: the ALPS TwistTrap fires the rotator when the lock is twisted, keeping the "Always Locked" status9.
- Anti-thermal manipulation: an Ultion exclusive, according to the maker9.
The police take the same view of the standard behind this. Guidance from Sussex Police describes 3-star TS007 euro cylinder locks as protecting against lock snapping, drilling and bumping13. If your door has an older cylinder that protrudes beyond the frame handle, Avon and Somerset Police advise getting a member of the Master Locksmiths Association to change it to a shorter, more snap-resistant one14.
Lockdown mode: what happens when the lock is attacked
Most locks fail by breaking. Ultion's answer is to fail by seizing. If someone attempts to snap the cylinder, the maker states that instead of breaking and exposing the locking mechanism, Ultion locks solid: the internal mechanism seizes, preventing any further access3. The maker calls this Lockdown Mode, and describes it as an additional hidden lock encased inside a solid molybdenum core and secured with a dedicated retaining pin, triggered when signs of forced entry are detected5.
The 3 PLUS version adds Double LockDown Mode, in which a series of attack pins are engaged in the core when it detects an attack10. The Ultion Smart carries the same Lockdown Mode snap protection11.
For a household, the practical effect is that a failed attack leaves you with a lock that still works and a door that is still shut. It also means you should not try to force a lock that has been attacked: if it has seized, call a locksmith rather than forcing the key.
Approvals from the police, locksmiths and the BSI
Ultion's approvals are the part of the page a household should weigh most carefully, because they are checked by bodies other than the maker. The maker states that Ultion is police preferred, approved by locksmiths and secure by design3, and that it is approved by locksmiths, the police and the British Standards Institution4. The 3 Star PLUS Lock is listed as TS 007 Certified, Sold Secure Diamond, and Police Preferred Specification under Secure by Design5.
What those labels mean matters. Secured by Design is the official UK police flagship initiative, combining the principles of designing out crime with physical security15. Police Scotland advises buying windows and doors certified by Secure by Design16, and Secured by Design itself says to look for its logo on the packaging or ask whether a product has been accredited17. Age UK's guidance adds that security products licensed by Secured by Design have passed police standards and tests18.
The smart lock carries its own approvals. The Ultion Nuki 2025 is listed as meeting Police Preferred specification, with the approval of the Master Locksmiths Association and Secure by Design status12. Which? describes the Ultion Nuki cylinder as BSI Kitemark certified, calling it the highest physical security standard19.
| Approval | What it covers | Who gives it |
|---|---|---|
| Police Preferred Specification | The product meets police security standards | Secured by Design, the UK police initiative15 |
| Secured by Design | Accredited security product, logo on packaging | Secured by Design17 |
| TS 007 Certified | The cylinder standard for anti-snap locks | British Standards Institution5 |
| Sold Secure Diamond | Independent attack testing | Sold Secure5 |
| Master Locksmiths Association approval | Trade body approval of the lock | MLA12 |
Trained MLA locksmiths could not break it in 2.5 hours
The strongest evidence on the page is not a maker claim but a test by people whose job is opening locks. The maker states that trained Master Locksmiths Association locksmiths could not break the lock in 2.5 hours. MLA locksmiths have passed the MLA Qualification20, so this is a test by qualified professionals rather than an enthusiast with tools.
That figure is worth putting in context. A burglar at a door wants to be inside in seconds, not hours. A lock that holds for 2.5 hours against trained locksmiths is a lock that will almost certainly outlast an opportunist. It does not make a door impregnable: an attacker can go through a window, a weak frame or an unlocked back door instead.
The maker also publishes customer reports. One customer had an Ultion fitted on a newer front door and the burglar did not get in, with locks fitted within a couple of days after a break-in3. Another had an Ultion 3 Star PLUS fitted after burglars snapped the old barrel5. These are individual accounts, not test results, but they describe the situation most households actually face.
The thick key that partners the lock

Ultion's key is deliberately oversized. The maker states that its precision-cut keys are 60% thicker than the rest of the market, giving more resistance to snapping and bending13, and calls the 3 Star PLUS key the UK's thickest15. A thin key can snap in the lock, which leaves you unable to get in or out. A thicker key is harder to break and harder to bend.
Each key is precision machine cut8 and carries an engraved keycode for your security8. The code is one letter, from U, X, Y or Z, followed by eight numbers, engraved on the head of the key5. You can use that code to order a new key that works with your existing lock, or to have a new lock made to work with your existing key5. The maker states that other doors can be secured with Ultion locks made to work with your unique key2, and the padlock can be keyed alike to an existing Ultion key by giving the 10 digit code from the back of your key at the point of order6.
For a household, keyed-alike matters in an emergency. One key that opens the front door, the back door and the shed padlock is one key to find in the dark, and one key to give a neighbour or a carer. Keep a spare somewhere secure and off the premises, and record the keycode somewhere other than the keyring.
The smart lock option: Ultion Nuki
The Ultion Nuki is a smart door lock made with Nuki and designed for UK doors2. It replaces your existing handle using the existing fixing holes, with no drilling or wiring, and the maker states it takes only minutes7. It fits doors with handle fixings of 215mm, 211mm, 122mm and doors with an escutcheon lock7, and it works with doors where the handle must be lifted to lock: all unlocking features work, and you lift the handle as normal when passing through7.
Its emergency relevance is in the automation. A timer set in the app starts whenever the door is unlocked and locks it again when the timer expires7. Night Mode locks the door automatically at the start of Night Mode and enables an energy saving mode until morning7. Auto Unlock opens the door when the app establishes a Bluetooth connection within 20 minutes of entering the geofence7, and the next Auto Unlock only triggers when you exit the geofence and enter it again21. The maker states the Nuki 2025 can be installed in less than four minutes with no drilling or wiring12.
The smart lock has limits a household should know before relying on it. It runs on a USB-C rechargeable battery22, so it depends on charge, and it works with a specific type of Ultion lock that has only ever been used within an Ultion Smart lock; Ultion locks operated inside by key or thumbturn will not fit22. The maker states it can be made to work from your existing Ultion key at no charge22. Which? notes that the Ultion Nuki cylinder is BSI Kitemark certified19.
Ordering, dispatch and keeping the lock ready
The maker states same day dispatch6. That is useful when a lock has failed or a door has been damaged, but it is not a reason to leave replacement until the night before a storm. Order early in the day, and confirm the delivery details when you order.
Keeping the lock ready is mostly about the small things:
- Lubricate it. The maker's graphite lubricant is formulated for high-security cylinders and keeps locks locking3. A stiff lock in cold weather is a lock you may not be able to turn in a hurry.
- Check the door, not just the barrel. Police guidance covers the frame, the hinges and the door material as well as the lock, and a locksmith can reinforce the frame, often with London and Birmingham bars14.
- Know your keycode. The Ultion Key carries an engraved keycode for your security5.
- Keep a mechanical key to hand for the smart lock, in case the app or the battery lets you down.
- Record who fitted it. If a locksmith fitted the lock, keep their details with your household emergency plan.
