The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued a stop warning for 17,000 heat pump tumble dryer owners, it announced on 1 August 2025. More than 17,000 owners whose appliances were modified by electrical manufacturer Haier must stop using them immediately because a fire risk still exists1.
OPSS has served Haier with an immediate "Requirement to Warn" Notice, placing the company under a statutory obligation to contact those owners who were part of its recent Corrective Action Programme1. The brands involved include Candy, Baumatic, Caple, Haier, Hoover, Lamona, Iberna and Montpellier1.
OPSS initially published Safety Reports in May 2025 which alerted consumers to the risk of fire in certain heat pump tumble dryer models, and it was recommended that affected consumers seek a modification from the company1. OPSS has now told Haier its modification programme is not satisfactory, so the company must inform those affected to tell them to switch off their appliance immediately1.
"OPSS has told Haier its modification programme is not satisfactory so the company must inform those affected to tell them to switch off their appliance immediately."
OPSS states that consumers who have one of the listed brands of heat pump tumble dryer should use the links on its notice to check whether their model is affected and contact the company1. The notice itself has been published as a PDF1. No further detail on the number of fires, injuries or incidents linked to the affected models has been reported.
Why it matters for households
The warning covers households in the UK that own one of the listed heat pump tumble dryer models and whose appliance was modified under Haier's Corrective Action Programme. For those owners the change is immediate: the modification carried out under that programme is no longer treated as resolving the fire risk, and OPSS has required Haier to tell them to switch the appliance off1. Owners of the listed brands who are unsure whether their model is affected are directed by OPSS to check against its notice and contact the company1. The OPSS notice does not set out any replacement, refund or repair arrangement, and none has been reported.
What happens next
Haier is under a statutory obligation to contact owners who took part in the Corrective Action Programme and to tell them to switch off their appliance immediately1. OPSS has not reported a date by which that contact must be completed, nor any further steps beyond the Requirement to Warn Notice.
