Modification programme launched for affected gas range cookers

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has updated its product safety report on certain Belling, Stoves and New World gas range cookers with gas grills to record that manufacturer Glen Dimplex Home Appliance Ltd (GDHA) launched a modification programme on Wednesday 2 November 20221. The report was first published on 15 August 2022 and carries a risk level of serious1.

The products in scope are gas range cookers with gas grills, including 110, 100 and 90cm models, sold under the Belling, Stoves and New World brand names1. The report states that products in scope were purchased at any time between 2010 and 2022, and that a full list of model numbers and images is provided in the linked product safety report1. The OPSS says cookers used with the grill door closed can cause extremely dangerous levels of carbon monoxide to be produced, which can pose a significant risk to health and death, and that the product does not meet the requirements of the Gas Appliances (Enforcement) and Miscellaneous Amendments Regulations 20181.

The corrective action recorded in the report is as follows:

"Consumers must call 0800 110 5728 or email consumersupport@glendimplex.com to register for the free modification. In the meantime, consumers must only use the gas grill with the grill door open."

The report adds that anyone who no longer owns the product should still contact Glen Dimplex so that the new owner can be traced1. It also states that OPSS has required GDHA and retailers to remove the product from the market, from being on sale, with immediate effect1. The measures listed against the report are warning consumers of the risks and withdrawal of the product from the market1.

Why it matters for households

The report concerns households in the UK that own one of these cookers, wherever it was bought between 2010 and 2022, including anyone who has since acquired one second hand. Until the free modification has been carried out, the OPSS says the gas grill must only be used with the grill door open1. The report does not state how long the modification takes to arrange or complete, and no completion figures have been reported1. The OPSS also states that the product has been withdrawn from sale with immediate effect, so the models in scope should no longer be offered by GDHA or retailers1. Households can check the full list of affected model numbers and product images through the product safety report linked from the OPSS page1. General guidance on gas cooking appliances is covered in the site's heating and cooking hub.

What happens next

GDHA is running the modification programme for products in scope, with registration by phone or email1. The OPSS page records the launch date of 2 November 2022 and lists the Belling, Stoves and New World safety notice webpages for further information1. No end date for the programme has been reported1.
