Further icy weather cuts power to 15,368 more customers

Northern Powergrid reported on Monday 6 January 2025 that further icy showers and wintry conditions had affected its network, with a further 15,368 customers experiencing power cuts from Sunday evening into Monday1. The company said its teams had returned power to 14,140 customers throughout the day and would continue working until all remaining 1,228 customers were back on supply1.

The disruption followed a wider outage over the weekend. Northern Powergrid said over 27,000 customers across the North East, Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire experienced power outages as a result of the wintry weather throughout Sunday, and that power had been restored to all customers affected, predominantly in the Yorkshire regions1. The company said the areas worst affected by the later cuts were Northumberland and County Durham, and Tyne and Wear1.

The company described its staff as working in challenging conditions, with snow, wind and ice1. It said its contact centre teams were available 24/7 and were reaching out to affected customers and signposting them to warm hubs open until 10pm that evening1.

"If you need any additional support please call on 105 and we will do what we can to help."

Northern Powergrid also directed customers to its live power cut map for updates1. The company did not state in its update how many households were involved, how long the remaining repairs were expected to take, or which specific warm hubs were open; those details have not been reported1.

Why it matters for households

The affected areas are Northumberland, County Durham and Tyne and Wear, where 1,228 customers remained off supply on Monday evening according to the company's update1. For those households the practical position is a loss of electricity in icy conditions, with the network operator saying it will keep working until supply is restored1. Northern Powergrid's advice to customers needing additional support is to call 105, and it says its contact centre teams are available 24/71. It is also signposting affected customers to warm hubs open until 10pm that evening1. Households can read more on why the electricity goes off and on how long restoration can take, and on how to report a loss of electricity by ringing 105.
