Recall supersedes Morco water heater modification programme

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) updated its product recall notice for Morco Primo (MP) and EUP gas water heaters on 15 January 2025, recording that a product recall has superseded the modification programme previously in place. The notice was first published on 26 March 2024 and carries the recall date of 15 January 20251.

The affected appliances are four models of open-flued water heaters: Primo 6 (MP6), Primo 11 (MP11), EUP6 and EUP11. They are described as white domestic gas water heaters supplied between 2018 and 2023, of Italian origin, and may be installed in mobile homes, caravans and domestic settings1. The notice states that the products present a serious risk of fire because of a risk of gas leaking which, if ignited, may set fire to flammable components on the front of the heater, and that a leak may cause burns, explosions and injuries. The products are not in conformity with Regulation 2016/4261.

The corrective action recorded is a recall of the product from end users. The notice states that products which have previously been modified as part of the earlier programme are also in scope of the recall1.

"Owners of gas water heaters installed (including those which have previously received a safety upgrade) should contact Morco immediately to discuss next steps. Owners should not attempt to check or test the appliance themselves."

Why it matters for households

The recall covers heaters installed in homes, mobile homes and caravans, so households with one of these models are affected, including those whose heater received a safety upgrade under the earlier modification programme. The change recorded on 15 January 2025 means the earlier modification route no longer applies and affected units fall under the recall instead1. The OPSS advises owners not to check or test the appliance themselves and to contact Morco immediately to discuss next steps, and directs anyone who smells gas to the National Gas emergency helpline1. Households without gas heating because an appliance is disconnected or awaiting recall action can find general guidance in the guide to gas and heating failures.

What happens next

Morco has initiated the recall, and the notice points owners to the Morco website for a form to request a refund or a replacement1. No completion date or further timetable for the recall has been reported.
