Gas escape in Swarcliffe, Leeds LS14 area

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), which describes itself as the gas distribution network for the North of England, said on 27 September 2024 that it was on site in the LS14 area of Leeds dealing with a gas escape1. The company said it was deploying resource in the Swarcliffe area and that the Ring Road must be closed because of the nature of the work1.

Jamie Reynolds, Operations Manager at NGN, said the company was working continuously to repair the escape and hoped to have the road back open by Monday morning at the latest1.

"We are working continuously to repair this escape, and have the road back open at the earliest opportunity, which we hope will be Monday morning at the latest."

NGN said anyone who smells gas or suspects carbon monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999, a line it says operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week1. The company also issued instructions for households on turning off a gas supply at the meter. It said people should not attempt to turn off their supply at the meter if they live in a block of flats or occupy a multi storey building, or if their service pipe, the pipe that extends from the meter and connects it to the gas main in the street, is 3 inches in diameter or more, which it says is often the case for industrial and commercial properties and public buildings1. In those cases it asks people to contact it immediately to arrange for an engineer to turn off the gas supply safely, and to speak to its team if unsure whether this applies1. Its customer care team can be reached on 0800 040 7766, option 41.

No casualty figures, number of properties affected or cause of the escape have been reported1.

Why it matters for households

Households in the Swarcliffe and wider LS14 area are affected while the repair is under way, and drivers face the Ring Road closure until NGN hopes to reopen it on Monday morning1. NGN's guidance draws a distinction between ordinary domestic supplies and flats, multi storey buildings and premises with larger service pipes, where it asks people not to turn off the gas at the meter themselves but to contact the company so an engineer can do it1. The National Gas Emergency Service number given by NGN is 0800 111 999, staffed around the clock1. For general preparation on gas leaks, carbon monoxide and other home emergencies, see the guide to home emergencies: fire, carbon monoxide, gas leaks and burst pipes, and the gas and heating failures hub.

What happens next

NGN said it is working continuously on the repair and hopes the Ring Road will reopen by Monday morning at the latest1. No further timetable for completing the work has been reported1.
