Amber rain warning issued for southeast Northern Ireland

The Met Office issued an Amber severe weather warning for rain for the southeast of Northern Ireland on Sunday 20 July 2025, valid from 23:00 on Sunday through to 08:00 on Monday morning1. Within the Amber warning area, 50 to 75 mm of rain could fall over a short period of time, leading to a risk of flash flooding1.

A wider Yellow severe weather warning for rain covers the whole eastern half of Northern Ireland, running from 18:00 on Sunday through to 18:00 on Monday evening1. The Met Office said there remains some uncertainty regarding the northern extent of the heaviest rain1.

Chief Meteorologist Andy Page said the high intensity rainfall can lead to flooding, with impacts on properties, transport networks and power outages, and that the heavy rain comes at the start of a new working week1.

"The heavy rain comes at the start of a new working week so expect disruption to the Monday morning commute and check the flood risk in your area to protect your property."

The Met Office advises households to check their property's flood risk, prepare essentials such as charging a mobile phone, move cars outside flood risk areas and store valuables high up1. It says it is safer not to drive in these conditions, but that anyone who must drive can do so more safely by slowing down, using main roads, using dipped headlights and allowing more time to react on slippery surfaces1.

Why it matters for households

The warning covers the southeast of Northern Ireland under Amber and the whole eastern half of Northern Ireland under Yellow, so households across that area are affected from Sunday evening into Monday1. The Met Office expects disruption to the Monday morning commute and possible impacts on properties, transport networks and power outages1. Its published advice covers flood risk checks, charging a mobile phone, moving cars out of flood risk areas, storing valuables high up and avoiding driving where possible1. The Met Office weather warnings guide explains what the Yellow, Amber and Red levels mean, and households can find sign-up details in how to sign up for Met Office weather alerts. What happens next

After the band of rain clears on Monday evening, the Met Office says conditions will settle down in Northern Ireland, though showers will persist through the week, with some sunny spells between the showers and temperatures remaining fairly consistent with highs of 20 to 21°C1. The Met Office directs people to its website, YouTube, X, Facebook and mobile app for the latest warnings and forecast1.
