NIFRS issues Storm Éowyn safety response statement

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) announced on Thursday 23 January 2025 that it is prepared and ready to respond to incidents across the province from challenging weather conditions as a result of Storm Éowyn1. The service said its contingency plans remain in place and that it is working alongside partner agencies as part of the emergency response1.

In its statement, NIFRS set out safety advice covering travel, flooding, power cuts and electricity hazards1. It said many roads are closed for the safety of road users and that motorists should drive at the speed the conditions allow for, as it takes longer to stop when the road is wet1. Obstructions can be reported at www.nidirect.gov.uk or on the 24-hour number 0300 200 7899, and serious flooding should be reported to the NI Flooding Incident Line on 0300 2000 1001. The service said people should stay clear of any damaged electricity equipment and report it immediately to NIE Networks on 03457 643 6431.

"If there is a risk to life dial 999 immediately and we will respond."

The statement also asked the public to prepare for possible power cuts by having a torch or battery operated candles ready, and to check in with vulnerable family, friends and neighbours by telephone where possible1. No casualty figures, damage estimates or specific areas of Northern Ireland affected by the storm were given in the statement, and none have been reported alongside it1.

Why it matters for households

The advice applies to households across Northern Ireland for the duration of Storm Éowyn and its aftermath, a period for which the statement gives no end date1. For households, the practical points set out by NIFRS are: roads may be closed and journeys may take longer, so travel advice and closure information should be checked before setting out; a power cut may leave the home without lighting, so a torch or battery operated candles should be to hand; and damaged electricity equipment should not be approached but reported to NIE Networks1. The service also advises people who can to telephone vulnerable family, friends and neighbours to check they are staying safe, and to dial 999 immediately if there is a risk to life1. Further information and advice is available at www.nidirect.gov.uk, according to the statement1. Households preparing for storms and snow can find background in the guide to storms and snow.

What happens next

NIFRS said its contingency plans remain in place and that it will continue to respond to incidents should people need it in an emergency1. No further timetable, review point or update schedule was given in the statement1.
