Met Office issues yellow thunderstorm warning for parts of eastern Scotland

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms covering Angus, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray, which came into effect from 2pm on Wednesday and was expected to remain in place until 9pm1. STV News reported the warning on 19 August 2026, with the article last updated at 17:53 that day1.

The forecaster warned that slow-moving, heavy showers were likely to develop, with up to 15-20mm, possibly 30mm, of rain falling over a few hours before easing in the evening1. Heavy rain and thunderstorms could also lead to flooding, with residents and businesses urged to remain vigilant, and the Met Office added that there was a chance of power cuts in some areas1. Drivers were warned to take care on roads because of difficult driving conditions and road closures, while public transport could be disrupted1.

The same warning advised people to check road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, and to amend travel plans if necessary1. It also stated that anyone outside who hears thunder should protect themselves by finding a safe enclosed shelter such as a car, should not shelter under or near trees or other structures which may be struck by lightning, and should move to lower ground if on an elevated area1. On power cuts, it stated that people cope better when they have prepared in advance, and suggested gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items1. It added that the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in the area, and being prepared for warnings to change quickly1.

Why it matters for households

Households across Angus, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray were affected for the afternoon and evening of Wednesday 19 August, with the warning running from 2pm to 9pm1. The Met Office warned of surface water flooding from slow-moving heavy showers, possible power cuts in some areas, difficult driving conditions and road closures, and disruption to public transport1. The warning's own guidance covers preparing a flood plan and emergency flood kit where flash flooding is a risk, checking travel information before setting out, seeking enclosed shelter if thunder is heard, and keeping torches, batteries and a phone power pack ready for a power cut1. The Met Office's explanation of warning levels is set out in the guide to Met Office weather warnings: yellow, amber and red explained, and further household guidance is collected in the storms and snow section.

What happens next

The warning was due to expire at 9pm on Wednesday 19 August, with the showers expected to ease in the evening1.
