7,000 customers still without power as of Sunday morning

Northern Powergrid reported at 10am on Sunday 26 January 2025 that 7,000 customers remained without power following Storm Éowyn, which struck on Friday. The network operator said it had restored supply to 147,000 of the 150,000 customers affected, and that over half of those had their power back on Saturday1.

The company said it was aiming to restore power today to customers affected in the North Yorkshire and Teesside areas. It warned that further high winds were expected on Sunday, which it said would make it challenging for teams to carry out repairs safely, adding that it would keep working where it was safe to do so1. It also said its contact centre was experiencing high call volumes and longer waiting times than usual, and directed customers to its live power cut map for estimates of when power is likely to return1.

Louise Lowes, Director of Customer Services, said:

"Whilst we're making good progress in getting power back to the 150,000 customers who were impacted by the storm on Friday, I want to apologise to customers are waking up still without power."

For households that have been off supply for more than 24 hours, the company said it is offering support with overnight accommodation of up to £150 per household per night towards hotel rooms, and reimbursement of costs of up to £30 per day per household for essentials such as hot food. Receipts must be provided for hotel accommodation or reimbursement will not be processed, and claims with receipts and details are to be sent to cus.serv@northernpowergrid.com1. The company said it would contact customers directly who may be entitled to compensation under its Guaranteed Standards of Service1.

Northern Powergrid also said welfare teams were being sent out, offering hot drinks, snacks, charging points and answering questions, along with food vans and warm hubs. Customers who have logged their power cut online or via 105 will receive information on the locations of welfare1.

Why it matters for households

The households still affected are those in Northern Powergrid's supply area who lost power when the storm struck on Friday, with particular attention on the North Yorkshire and Teesside areas, where the company said it aimed to restore supply today1. For anyone who has now been without power for more than 24 hours, the company's support with hotel costs and essentials applies, subject to receipts being sent to the email address it gave1. The company advises customers to use its live power cut map on the Northern Powergrid website for updates on when power is likely to come back on, rather than calling, because the map holds the same information as its contact centre teams1. Households wanting to understand typical restoration times after an outage can read our guide to how long until the electricity comes back, and our power cuts hub covers wider preparation for supply loss.

What happens next

Northern Powergrid said it would provide another update by 14:00 on Sunday 26 January 20251. It said it would contact customers directly who may be entitled to compensation under its Guaranteed Standards of Service1.
