Northern Powergrid reported on 9 December 2024 that crews from its other regions, which had restored all customers in their areas the previous day, were assisting in North Yorkshire and Humberside to boost restoration efforts after Storm Darragh. As at 11:30am that day, the network operator said it was well positioned to restore all remaining customers by that night1.
The company said Storm Darragh caused 120,000 power cuts for around 80,000 customers, and that over 120,000 power cuts had been restored since the storm hit. The remaining figure was 1,154 customers without power. Northern Powergrid said Storm Darragh brought strong winds across its regions throughout Saturday and Sunday1.

Steve McDonald, Northern Powergrid's Director of Field Operations, said:
"Today we are focused on getting our remaining customers back on supply by tonight and ensuring they are kept fully up to date and offered welfare support until their power is back on."
The company said its welfare support teams were out in the communities most affected providing hot meals and additional support, going door to door and keeping in contact with customers in the areas most affected so they knew the locations of its Customer Support Vehicles and what other support was available locally. It said it was working with its Local Resilience Forum partners and keeping customers updated on open warm hubs in their community1.
Why it matters for households
The disruption affected households across Northern Powergrid's regions, with the remaining outages concentrated in North Yorkshire and Humberside at the time of the update. For those still off supply, the company said it had offered a £150 contribution to overnight accommodation, plus further financial support where appropriate, to customers without power for more than 24 hours. It also said welfare teams were providing hot meals and that customers were being kept informed of warm hubs and Customer Support Vehicles in their areas1. Households preparing for storm-related outages can find general guidance in the site's power cuts hub.
What happens next
Northern Powergrid said it aimed to reconnect all remaining customers by the night of 9 December 2024, and that it would not stop until the final remaining customers affected by Storm Darragh were safely reconnected1.
