Vaillant is a heating manufacturer, and for a UK household its name means one thing above all: the gas boiler on the wall and the controls that run it. That matters on a preparedness site because a boiler is the piece of home equipment most likely to let you down in the week you need it most. It needs electricity to run, it needs gas to burn, and it needs an annual service to stay safe and efficient.
So the practical answer for a Vaillant household is this. Keep the annual service up to date, because regular maintenance keeps the boiler running efficiently and safely, validates any manufacturer's warranty and helps lengthen its lifespan1. Know that in a power cut the boiler stops, because its pump, fan and controls all need mains electricity, and plan another way to keep one room warm. And keep the service contact details with the rest of your household emergency information, alongside your water and power cut numbers.
What Vaillant makes for UK households
Vaillant's products for UK homes are gas boilers and the heating systems built around them: the boiler itself, the wall-mounted controls that set the temperature and hot water, and the hot water cylinders that store it. The manufacturer's own documents set out the detail. The sensoHOME VRT 380f/2 is supplied with a radio receiver unit, fixing material, four LR06 batteries and documentation5.
The cylinders come in a range of sizes, with volumetric capacities of 150 l, 175 l, 210 l and 250 l across the VIH RW models, and V40 volumes running from 193 l to 420 l depending on the model6. For an emergency plan, the useful point is simply that a stored cylinder of hot water is a resource: it holds heat, and it holds water.
A boiler is a fuel-burning appliance, in the same family as ovens, stoves, cookers, fires, wood burners and heaters7. That classification is what drives everything below about servicing and safety.
Annual service: what keeps your Vaillant warranty valid
An annual boiler service is described as essential and a relatively inexpensive piece of maintenance to undergo each year1. Regular maintenance ensures the boiler runs efficiently and safely for the year ahead, validates any manufacturer's warranty and helps lengthen the boiler's lifespan1. An annual service by a qualified technician can identify minor issues before they become costly, and improve efficiency by up to 30 per cent2.
Official advice points the same way. Fire and rescue services advise households to have the boiler serviced annually8, and to check that there is a regular maintenance programme for gas heaters and appliances9. In Northern Ireland, the guidance is to get gas appliances serviced regularly10. The Health Service in Scotland lists boilers among fuel-burning appliances and advises that they are serviced and maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions and inspected by a qualified professional annually11.
Vaillant's own controls carry the reminder for you. The sensoCOMFORT VRC 720 displays a maintenance message showing the date on which maintenance is due for the heating installation, with the instruction to carry out the required maintenance work, and a second message stating that the heat generator requires maintenance work, referring you to the operating or installation instructions for the relevant unit4.
The 12 point check and what an installer does
The manufacturer's installation documents use numbered system diagrams to describe how a heating system is put together. For a hybrid heat pump arrangement, where domestic hot water is provided by the heat pump and a back-up boiler with a bivalent domestic hot water cylinder, the diagram is numbered 12 without a heat exchanger and 13 with one4. That numbering is the installer's shorthand for the configuration, not a checklist a household runs through.
What a household should take from it is simpler: the system is a set of connected parts, and a service checks the parts as a system rather than the boiler alone. That is why the service visit is the moment to ask about anything that has behaved oddly over the year, and why the controls' own maintenance prompts are worth acting on rather than clearing.
Maintenance agreements and service support
Vaillant runs its own service and maintenance operation. Its service support is described as 280 engineers covering 364 days a year3. For a household, that continuity is the point: heating failures do not respect bank holidays, and a manufacturer's own engineers carry the right parts and know the controls.
Compare that with what happens around a wider outage. During Storm Amy in the north of Scotland, the network operator's teams were on hand 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to help12, and Northern Powergrid's customer service team was available 24/713. Vaillant's 364 days sits in the same territory: near-continuous cover, with the calendar doing the rest.
If your boiler fails in cold weather, treat it as a heating emergency rather than an inconvenience. The site's guide to gas and heating failures sets out what to do first, and heating and cooking without mains power or gas covers how to keep one room warm while you wait for an engineer.
What happens to a Vaillant system in a power cut
A gas boiler needs electricity for its pump, fan and controls, so it will not heat the house while the power is off. The controls themselves keep their settings: after the power is switched off, the date is retained for approximately 30 minutes14. Beyond that, expect to reset the clock when the power returns.

Power cuts can be long. The London Risk Register describes a simultaneous loss of all fixed and mobile forms of communication affecting approximately 1,000,000 customers for 7 days15. In the December 2013 storms, one network recorded 284 faults repaired, 23,207 customers off supply and a maximum restoration time of 1,411 hours16. Plan for the possibility that the heating is off for days, not hours.

Safety notices and carbon monoxide
A boiler that burns gas can produce carbon monoxide if it is faulty, and that is the reason servicing is not optional. Carbon monoxide alarms are the backstop: all Ei Electronics models are approved to EN 5029117. Fit one, test it, and never block a flue or drape anything over the boiler.
Product recalls happen across the heating industry. In February 2024 a safety notice was issued for the Ideal Heating Logic 2 Combi and System Boiler Range, classified as gas appliances and components, domestic gas boiler18. No recall of a Vaillant product is recorded here, but the lesson holds: check the government's product safety alerts for your own model, and act on anything you find.
Where to get help
If a power cut leaves you without heating and you need extra support, ask your network operator about its priority services. Gas and electricity companies offer schemes and support similar to the water industry's Priority Services Register, such as password schemes or supplying bills in large print or braille, and you should contact suppliers directly for more information19. The site's guide to extra help in an emergency explains who qualifies and how to register.
For warmth during an outage, councils publish lists of warm spaces: local churches, faith groups, community centres, businesses and more take part in the Warm Welcome scheme, and the list on the website grows as more organisations register. Your council's cost of living pages are the place to look.
